Hello,
I'm new to this list, so forgive me if this has been asked before. I
have an ATI Expert 2000 32MB AGP video card. Using Mandrake 8.2, Xfree
4.2.0. I am experiencing random lockups and I have read that I should be
using the ati driver for this card. How do specify/tell X to use the
ati
I have another question. Is the ATI Radeon 7200 card a good card? Does
Xfree86 4.2.0 support it well?

First, use ps aux to verify that there is indeed an
extra X server running - if there is, nuke it with
'killall -TERM X'. If there's not, delete
/tmp/.X2-lock (you might have to be root), and try

Look in the file /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 (well, that's
where RedHat keeps it - Mandrake very very

'Device' section, there should be a line that reads
'Driver foo'. Change whatever foo is to ati.
Also, if you're not already, upgrade to Linux

You could upgrade to RedHat 7.3, that includes kernel 2.4.18. Or go to
Check out www.xfree86.org and their documentation section. You can find out
there.
Of course, they say they support my card, and I've spent about 35 hours
trying to get it to work. Now I'm going to take a look at the source code
of the drivers and see if I can figure out where it's bombing

Hmmm, I am no expert, but it sounds like you have two problems:
1) Your mouse is misconfigured
2) Your are running raw X w/o any window manager.
If I were you I'd send:
a) Your XF86Config file;
b) your /var/log/XFree86.0.log
c) your video card
Otherwise your not likely to get any help,
