Off topic I know, but how about vnc. You'll need to get the server side
installed at school and then run the client at home.
Full twm style interface as I recall.

But I think you should try a newsgroup more relative to localazation than to
XFree86.

By the way, have you tried the other configuration programs There are two or three: X
-configure
or xf86cfg etc.
just save your XF86Config and try...
