Believe it or not, I got the problem resolved, and it was surprisingly easy. I found in the configuration section of http://www.xfree86.org/3.3.6/MGA3.html a little blurb that said that the auto-detect of VideoRam did not work for the G200, and suggested entering in the value manually.

I entered VideoRam 8192 into /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 in the Device section, typed startx and WOW! it works beautifully! It's always the simplest things...

As a side note, I checked the kernel configuration and found that MTRR support is not compiled by default into this installation. It does not appear to make a difference, because the display is very nice now, but I thought I would share this tidbit of information since it generated an EE message.

I hope my blundering will help someone else out, and I really appreciate the assistance from you and Meelis Roos.

Now, if I can only find a way to return to the original version of X on the one drive I "upgraded"....
