is it correct that the 4.x driver for the Cirrus Logic 5430 chip does not
support interlacing while the 3.3.6 driver (XF86_SVGA) did ?
If yes, is it likely that support for interlace will be added to the
4.x driver ?
The reason I ask is that I was able to get 1024x768 at 16 bit with 3.3.6

I installed RH 7.3 on an HP server with a Cirrus 5420 graphics chipset.
I can't get X to start. I tried the generic VGA driver and it would not
work. It looks like the support for this chip is not in 4.2.0-8.
Is there any way to get this version of X (4.2.0-8) to work or might it
be
Try setting your driver to XF86_SVGA. This will force it to use X3.?.
Alternatively, just run XF86_SVGA instead of startx.
