I'll guess that the framebuffer driver is not loaded. Did you insmod or
modprobe (equivalent things) the framebuffer prior to starting X?

You may want to try replacing the relevant sections with:
# Graphics device section

Section "Device"
Identifier"Generic VGA Card"
VendorName"Unknown"
