[newbie] I keep having problems with X windows

I installed Linux on my computer only to find that it did not have the C++ libraries, so I downloaded the tar file for that and then followed the instructions to install gcc on my computer. All went well until I rebooted my machine. Now I can not get it to go into the GUI mode. I have tried

[newbie] I am having problems with my modem

I have a US Robotics 56K Sportster modem, it is about 3 years old so it is not a winmodem. Anyway, I can get linux to find the driver and query the modem, but it always says "the modem is busy." I need to get this running as soon as possible. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Mark
