So Mark Foley, who actually harassed real live youngsters, gets off (so to speak) scot-free. On the other hand, Bernie Ward, the liberal talk show host they nailed for trading kiddie porn on-line, gets over 7 years in prison.
So if you're going to break the law, make sure you're a Republican, because Republicans, being God's people, enjoy a special right to break the law. MCM FDLE: Not enough evidence for charges against Foley By Mark Hollis Sun-Sentinel.com 1:10 PM EDT, September 19, 2008 WEST PALM BEACH http://www.sun-sentinel.com/news/local/palmbeach/sfl-0919foley,0,4139346.story A two-year state investigation into former U.S. Rep. Mark Foley's salacious electronic messages to underage congressional pages has found insufficient evidence for filing criminal charges. Results of the state investigation by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement were released today. A separate FBI investigation hasn't been closed. "FDLE conducted as thorough and comprehensive investigation as possible considering Congress and Mr. Foley denied us access to critical data," FDLE Commissioner Gerald Bailey said. "Should additional information arise which is pertinent to this case, we will ensure it is appropriately investigated." FDLE officials said the findings were discussed with State Attorney William Eddins of the First Judicial Circuit, who agreed with FDLE's conclusions, according to a spokesperson for FDLE. Foley, who resigned in 2006, represented Florida's 16th Congressional District, which encompasses much of northern Palm Beach County, including parts of Wellington, and several other counties. The former Republican U.S. House member previously served in the Florida Legislature. Contacted by e-mail today, Foley directed a reporter to his attorney, David Roth of West Palm Beach, for comment. Roth has acknowledged that Foley sent messages to teens, but has insisted that Foley never had inappropriate contact with minors. Roth said he would make a statement at a 6 p.m. press conference in West Palm Beach. Despite his political popularity for years in Palm Beach County, Foley's legacy is wrapped in his downfall and the salacious instant-message exchanges that provoked it. In the aftermath, Foley has said that he had been sexually abused by a priest at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Lake Worth. Foley also received treatment for sexual compulsion and alcoholism.
