I don't want to name names but I still am wondering how some players could pass the

"There's always a reason for what happens. I went straight from winning the 1998
championship into the training camp for the World Cup. We made it to the
quarter-finals of the World Cup at the end of June, and United had to qualify for the
Champions League on July 22. You add it up - how much time did I have in between to
have a holiday and come back and be fit? I was drained and I hadn't had a holiday with
my family for nearly two years. But the manager was brilliant and arranged to give me
10 days off, six weeks later. And from the day he said that, I played out of my skin
again. I went to the West Indies, and after that, I never felt tired. I was just
enjoying it and we won the treble that year."

Extracts from

'IF Gary Pallister and Steve Bruce were in their prime at Old Trafford, do you think
they would be getting a rest from Sir Alex Ferguson under the squad rotation system?
Not a chance, unless it was a cold Wednesday night against Scunthorpe in the
Worthington Cup and Fergie allowed them to put their feet up. Other than that they
would play in every match - and central defence is the last area Fergie has found he
cannot tinker with this season...How can Fabien Barthez hope to see any kind of
understanding in front of him?...

Fergie has to accept he has got it wrong and go back to what United do best.

They have to play 4-4-2, a system they can operate with their eyes closed and he has
to pick his best 11 players, including Ruud van Nistelrooy, week-in, week-out. Unless
he wants to throw away the league and I don't think he has quite done that yet, he has
to do it now.

There has to be a period of consolidation, back to basics and if he acts quickly
enough, things could still be salvaged, because this season teams at the top will
continue to take points off each other.

Getting out the Bruce and Pallister videos for Laurent Blanc and Co might not go amiss
either. Get them concentrating on what they should be doing and allow Roy Keane to
stop trying to solve every problem.

Everytime Fergie tinkers with things, Keane is running round like the little boy
trying to stick his finger in the dyke to stop the water.

Every time he plugs one hole, another appears and he cannot do his own job effectively
enough. That is not good for Manchester United.'

Posted Tuesday, December 11, 2001 by bar-knee:
The Mirror reckons that yesterday's quotes by Becks - carried here - hint he will not
sign the deal offered by United. And there everyone else thought the opposite...

Mirror

'DAVID Beckham has offered his clearest hint he will refuse to sign a contract with
Manchester United until he knows the identity of Alex Ferguson's successor.

And that leaves open the prospect of the England captain getting so close to the end
of his deal, that he will be sold, or simply able to leave on a free transfer.

Beckham's future has been the subject of intense speculation recently, and that has
hardly been dulled by his demotion to the bench for United's last two matches.

But the player holds all the cards because United need him in their current position,
while he can simply wait until he becomes a free agent.

And yesterday, he did little to allay the growing fear among Old Trafford fans that he
seems destined to leave.

After picking up the Sports Personality of the Year award, an emotional Beckham was in
effusive mood when talking about his relationship with his club's fans.

He said: "I want to carry on playing for Manchester United.

"They are the team I support, they are the team my family support and it is the place
where I am most loved by the fans and I love them.''

But crucially, he again raised the question of the identity of the club's new manager,
reinforcing the idea he will not sign a new contract until he knows who the new boss
will be...at the earliest.

Beckham, his words heavy with suggestion, said: "It's going to be a very interesting
year, an interesting season.

"Obviously it's the manager's last year, but it will be very interesting to see who is
going to take over as the new manager."

The Mirror suggests Fergie is to panic buy - detailing three players that we're
interested in. Specific then...

'The Old Trafford boss has already seen an audacious move to land Chelsea defender
Marcel Desailly rejected but United have also been made aware that Desailly's young
central defensive partner William Gallas has a £7million buy-out clause in his
Stamford Bridge contract.

Ferguson has been chasing young Argentine Fabricio Coloccini, but would have to pay
around £10million for him, with Alaves exercising their option to buy him from AC
Milan and then selling him for a quick profit. Mirror Sport

has learned that United approached a third party - understood to be Desailly's agent
Pape Diouf - in a desperate attempt to sort out their defensive crisis with a
£3million move. But United were swiftly rebuffed by Stamford Bridge.'

Re Villa allocation:

IMUSA Press Officer, Jules Spencer said:

'This is the perfect opportunity for the club to demonstrate their oft quoted mantra,
that they act in the interest of their supporters. They neglected to do for the recent
Worthington Cup game at Arsenal, here is a chance to give United supporters the
opportunity to take up their rightful allocation.'

---------------------------------
[14] IMUSA communication sent out regarding Villa ticket allocation
---------------------------------
Posted Tuesday, December 11, 2001 by bar-knee:
'Dear Mr Merrett,

Today the club announced ticket details for the upcoming FA Cup game versus Aston
Villa at Villa Park on Jan 7th next year. We are somewhat surprised that for a ground
whose redevelopment has increased the capacity to circa 49,000, supporters of
Manchester United are only to receive 5,700 tickets.

Football Association rules regarding the supply and distribution of tickets to
visiting supporterís dictates as the following:

ìDISTRIBUTION OF TICKETS (FA Cup)
(a)ÝAll Rounds Preceding the Semi-Finals
In all matches preceding the Semi-Finals, the Visiting Club shall have the right to
claim up to 15% of all accommodation for which tickets are issued providing these
tickets are in a fully segregated area.î

An allocation of 5,700 equates to less than 12% of the capacity at Villa Park. This
falls well short of the allocation which supporters of Manchester United are entitled
to under FA rules. No doubt AVFC PLC will have made an attempt to justify this reduced
allocation, however as the areas usually reserved for visiting supporters in cup games
are in the North Stand Lower (circa 3000 seats) with the remaining in the corner of
the Doug Ellis stand lower, there is no justifiable rational in failing to provide
Manchester United supporters with the segregated allocation that we have the right to
under these said rules.

Aston Villa having failed on all but one occasion this season to sell out at Villa
Park (Manchester Unitedís visit in August) are using the popular draw of Manchester
United to benefit increased home support. An allocation of 15% will be circa 7,350,
some 1650 more than that which is being offered.

Aston Villa are in breach of the rules set down by the Football Association and we
expect Manchester United Football Club to rectify this flagrant breach of rules by
claiming the full 15% entitlement.

Considering Xmas post, the inevitable sale of tickets by Aston Villa to 'home'
supporters and the 3 day rule under section a,i; (The request for tickets shall be
made within three days of the draw), we urge that this is communicated to Aston Villa
with immediate urgency and that Manchester United revise their website / ticket
hotline to reflect the increase in the advertised allocation.

As a postscript, this is the perfect opportunity for you to demonstrate your
oft-quoted mantra that you act in the interest of your supporters. We were short
changed for the recent Worthington Cup game at Arsenal; here is a chance to give
Manchester United supporters the opportunity to take up their rightful allocation.

Yours Sincerely.

[10] Compare and contrast

Posted Tuesday, December 11, 2001 by bar-knee:
The Daily Star reports under the headline "DisUnited We Stand" that 'fans have turned
on Fergie' after an MEN poll showed 50% blamed Fergie for the current difficulties. Oh
dear, have the MEN learnt nothing? Wasn't it that very load of rubbish (a
self-selecting poll of city and ABUs) that got the MEN in The Govanor's bad books in
the first place all those years ago. What a contrast to the way it really is, as
reported in the Mail (see below) and witnessed in Stretty Tier 2?

Daily Mail extracts:

Among the rank and file United fans, backing and respect for Ferguson
remains absolute. He has after all won seven Premiership titles, the FA Cup four
times, the League Cup and a Champions League trophy.

Even Ferguson's fiercest critics would concede that for him to end his
management career without further triumph would be a shame. There is, of course, no
suggestion that Ferguson's reign will end in such fashion. The failures we discuss
here are - it should be stressed - relative only to United's glories of the last
decade.

Barney of Fanzine Red News said: 'In Spain they'd have been waving
the white hankies after Saturday, but not here. Fergie still has everything we need.
He has total support. After what he has done, how can he not have? This is a bad run,
that's all. It happens to
every club.'

[9] THE KILLING OF SISTER GEORGINA?
---------------------------------
Posted Tuesday, December 11, 2001 by redend:
Alex Plypin discharges:

It might seem a bit pernickety, but I have a number of little foibles when it comes to
pre-match preparations. I only wear Red, Black, or White, including underwear - I have
a preference for the Lucky Seat - and make a point, on nearly all occasions, to walk
The Winning Ways precisely, before ascending the 98 steps via the 3rd set from the
entrance. A harmless obsession or two, one might think, which all goes to assist with
the overall team perfomance. Or, that is the general idea!

So, on Saturday, I was somewhat perplexed to find that Georgina - a Bonny Brighton
Lass - bedecked in the colours of our opposition for the day. There was a time when
such effrontery would have been met with rough justice, as the result of mistaken
identity or not. Not only that, but one has to imagine the upbringing that poor child
must have suffered, if it had been deemed acceptable to wear loser blue - even on
non-match days. This tortured soul was given the opportunity to mend her wicked ways,
and it is to be hoped that she will see the light before our next fixture. Sanctions
will have to be imposed for non-compliance!

As one who forcefully advocated a `Return to The 70s' day at the latter part of last
season - with a pitifully poor response - I am dumbstruck that it appears to be the
players, rather than the fans, who have taken up the challenge. 26th November was the
35th anniversary of my 1st game (Sunderland 5-0 David Herd got a hattrick, and Nobby
was another scorer). At that time, it was a question of not whether we would win, but
by how many. I, for one, have never taken for granted our recent success, and often
feared that it would be snatched away from us when we least expected.

Opinions were expressed in recent months by others, are that what the RSHs need is a
challenge - and some adversity in order to wake up some of the complacent inhabitants
of The Library of Dreams. Better still, if the Jeremys and Jemimas all pissed off back
whence they came, and left their seats for local youngsters. Sad hacks who have been
itching to vent their bile for months - years - are having a field day. All the ABUs
who have skulked in the shadows - especially plastic scousers - are making themselves
known again.

So, all those of The Faith are having to face it being severely tested - and some,
sadly, are withering like the shoots without proper roots in the midday sun. The rest
of us appear to have found a new purpose, and whilst the offerings on the pitch take
us back to the days of Tommy Baldwin and Jim McCalliog, the atmosphere appears also to
be returning to that of the halcyon days.

They don't like us - WE DON'T CARE!!

[8] Pre-season in Spain?
---------------------------------
Posted Tuesday, December 11, 2001 by bar-knee:
We've told you before about the possibility of a four team tournament in Spain this
pre-season this excellent update from our Basque Dave

'MARCA suggested last weekend that United would be involved in next
August´s Santiago Bernabeu mini-tournament. It is held in Madrid and
will involve four teams United, Madrid, AC Milan and Bayern Munich - the Mighty Ms. It
normally takes place in around mid/late-August so I can t really see how it would fit
in with the start of the season.

The talk about us being interested in the 19 year old Alaves/Milan
defender Fabrizio C (cant spell his surname) refuses to go away. He is a lanky colt
with a great mop of frizzy blond hair - rather worryingly he looks a bit like Tommy
Caton. He seems to be getting plenty of goals for a central defender, and all the
pundits over here rate him as the find of the season. The second member of our new
Fab-Five defence? Milan have got first option on him though, and Madrid are apparently
interested as well, so it could be tricky.

The other qualty centre back available is Aitor Karanka, out of contract at Real
Madrid in the summer and refusing to take a wage cut he has been ostracised. He's
probably after a Bosman, so a reasonable offer would probably have Madrid interested.

Finally well done to all the lads in Tier2 on Saturday - I could hear
you loud and clear. The daft bastards who do the Spanish commentary
didn't have a clue what was going on though. The TV showed people
leaving, and they didn't want to depart from their "Man Yoo [yep it's
spread here too] In Crisis" storyline that they had prepared earlier.
Since Spanish fans are notoriously fickle, it just didn't occur to them that you
could actually support your team when they are struggling, and from their Madrid
studio they assumed it was the West Ham fans singing.'

as well, we would get 50% bigger gates than them and double their turnover. We can be
bigger than them, club for club. We want to show everyone in the world what a big club
we can be. "This will send a message to people who talk about a Phoenix League, so
they can see how their sides compare to ours. It is almost certainly on Sunday at 4pm,
as it's the number one game of the round. They (Sky TV) gave us the prime spot because
it is the prime tie of the round. We thought we had compelling reasons to play at the
Millennium Stadium. We would have been able to attract three times the number of our
own supporters, and been able to offer Leeds three times what we can offer them at
Ninian Park. It is a very major advantage for us to play at Ninian, as the
intimidation factor will be unbearable to any team."

"I'm very, very proud. When I first got to know about this, I thought someone was

what this means. It's very, very special and hard to grasp. I'm from a foreign country

country as recognition of my personal contribution through football. I never thought
about my contribution so this is just unbelievable."

Schmeichel's father Tolek, a well-known pianist in his own country, revealed he always

"I'm a musician and my wish was that Peter would also be a musician," he said. "But he
