[17] Wenger on Andy Cole
---------------------------------
Posted Wednesday, January 30, 2002 by bar-knee:
"Every striker needs chances, there is no 100% success rate. Andy Cole has scored
goals and, like everyone else, he misses sometimes but overall he is a great
goalscorer. They made the right decision. He has given us some hard times over the
years and I rate him highly as a striker. As far as England are concerned, he looked
to be out of favour at Manchester United so at 30 years of age, it was important for
him to move."

[16] Parlour does a Ned?
---------------------------------
Posted Wednesday, January 30, 2002 by bar-knee:
>From the Guardian

'Arsenal were last night investigating how tickets bought by their midfielder Ray
Parlour for last Sunday's controversial FA Cup fourth-round tie against Liverpool
found their way on to the black market and ended up being sold outside the ground.

The seats allocated to Parlour were located in Highbury's Lower East Stand from where
a coin was thrown at Liverpool's Jamie Carragher who subsequently threw it back and
was sent off. Arsenal have already said they would ban the coin-thrower if he or she
could be identified.

According to a report last night Parlour bought a batch of tickets at their face value
of £26 each. A student from Dublin bought three for £50 from a tout outside the
ground. He later noticed Parlour's name on the tickets.

Arsenal have a strict policy on touting but maintain that the former England player
Parlour "acted properly" in relation to the tickets for the Cup tie, a repeat of last
year's FA Cup final, which the Londoners this time won 1-0. The club say Parlour gave
the tickets to an acquaintance in good faith. '

[15] McClaren on Yorke bid
---------------------------------
Posted Wednesday, January 30, 2002 by bar-knee:
"There's nothing to report on that. I think the last time was after Saturday's game or
even yesterday and events were closing, and I think they're closing even quicker now.
I think on Wednesday, we'll certainly know one way or the other whether that has
developed."

[14] Bolton boss wanted foul given for 1st goal
---------------------------------
Posted Wednesday, January 30, 2002 by bar-knee:
Sam Allardyce on possible Ruud foul in lead up to 1st goal:

"It was a blatant foul on Anthony Barness, which was plain for all to see. That was a
crucial decision as far as we were concerned. The game stands at 0-0, there's a
blatant foul, the referee misses it and the opponents score as a result. It's a major
decision as far as I'm concerned. It probably would not have affected the result
perhaps and I think Manchester United would still have won the mood they were in. But
it was the wrong time to happen to us."

[13] More from Bolton boss
---------------------------------
Posted Wednesday, January 30, 2002 by bar-knee:
Sam Allardyce: "We got sucked in by United after a bright start by us. We didn't
concentrate defensively and their first goal knocked the stuffing out of us. When
Solskjaer got his third we were looking at the fairies and it was game over."

[12] That Fergie knock at Yorke in full
---------------------------------
Posted Wednesday, January 30, 2002 by bar-knee:
"Dwight Yorke's transfer has hit a snag. We've been looking to sign di Canio as
everyone knows. That has been derailed because of Yorke's reluctance to move, or his
agent's reluctance for him to move, more like it. But we will just have to soldier on
with the troops we have got."

way."

[10] More from Custis in the SUN
---------------------------------
Posted Wednesday, January 30, 2002 by bar-knee:
'He accepts his first- team chances will be limited for the rest of the season,
especially since Fergie signed Uruguayan Diego Forlan for £6.9m.

But Ferguson is due to retire in May and Yorke believes he can convince the new
manager he is worth another go.

Yorke is one of the lowest paid in United’s squad on a basic £25,000 a week but
sponsorship deals still make him one of football’s top earners.

And he was not ready to move unless it was absolutely right for him.'

[9] Yorke plays the joker card
---------------------------------
Posted Wednesday, January 30, 2002 by bar-knee:
>From Neil Custis in the SUN, a close contact of Dwight so highly likely. Ambition eh?

' DWIGHT YORKE will STAY at Manchester United and take his chances with the club’s new
manager next season.

The striker has decided to see out the final 18 months of his contract — then leave
for nothing if he wishes.

Yorke’s £6.25million transfer to Middlesbrough had stalled over his £57,000-a-week
wage demands but SunSport understands the final nail in the coffin was Alex Ferguson
using him as a substitute in United’s 2-0 FA Cup fourth-round defeat at Boro.

Yorke’s 11 minutes on the pitch meant he would be cup-tied and unable to play for Boro
in the competition this season.'

[7] Ole on getting a run
---------------------------------
Posted Wednesday, January 30, 2002 by bar-knee:
"When you get in the team you're really happy, but I know I'm part of a big squad and
that won't happen all the time. I don't mind sitting on the bench a few times, but I
know I have to take my chances when I get them."

[1] Fergie after Bolton 0 United 4
---------------------------------
Posted Wednesday, January 30, 2002 by bar-knee:
>From the official site

"I think we were more decisive in the final third of the field. On Saturday we spent
too much time passing the ball across defenders. We were very decisive today. They
knew themselves what they had to do. They've been playing long enough to know that.
They made their minds up very quickly. Bolton had one or two chances and Barthez made
a couple of good saves. That's to be expected, but it was good to have a clean sheet
as that brings confidence and tells people we're on song."

Race for the title
"This is the time of year where we have to step forward. I don't want any more messing
about. We need the points now.

"We know there's a big challenge ahead of us. You hope that there will be a battle at
the top but it rarely happens. It's good for the game and good for Manchester United.
We need the battles, we need resistence from everyone and it could turn out that there
are five or six teams up for the League come May.

"The way it's shaping up, it's very difficult to see that three or four teams will
drop away. I think one may do, but it looks like a race to the wire."

Transfer dealings

"We'd like to buy Paolo di Canio as everyone knows, but Dwight Yorke's transfer has
hit a snag because of Dwight's agent's reluctance for him to move. We'll just have to
soldier on with the troops we've got."

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer

"He's a marvellous finisher. To score a hat-trick away from home is very hard indeed.
His two headed goals were particularly good I thought, they were good timing with a
nice glance - really well taken."

Championship form?
"It is if you get to March and April. We were disappointed with the Liverpool game as
we did well and didn't deserve that. But that's the nature of football, you have to
pick yourself up and record victories like this."
