"United are winning easily at home against teams down at the bottom. But they are the
team who are struggling more than anyone to win against the big teams. I don't think
you can win the League if you do that. This Southampton result will not be decisive
for us. There is a long way to go. Manchester United will drop points. I said that
many times. We have struggled at home. United are doing well at the moment but they
are not the only important team. It is not only Man United. There is Leeds, Chelsea,
Liverpool. We want to win the League and will be up for it in every game. We have the
potential and the quality to do it."

[14] Funny story
---------------------------------
Posted Monday, February 4, 2002 by bar-knee:
Spotted by Steve in the Telegraph.

'SOME 22 minutes of the match between Arsenal and Southampton had elapsed when
Highbury witnessed yet another disciplinary milestone on Saturday afternoon. Matthew
Le Tissier, warming up with all his customary lethargy, made a sarcastic comment to a
referee’s assistant about a decision, the official called over the referee, Clive
Wilkes, and Wilkes promptly booked the Southampton talisman. Le Tissier looked
stunned. He did not kick a ball all afternoon.
Afterwards, Gordon Strachan, the Southampton manager, smiled when he was asked about
the incident. All the other controversies that have taken place at Highbury this
season flashed through his mind and he remembered the myopia that always afflicts
Arsène Wenger when he is asked to comment on his team’s serial misdeeds. “I never saw
it,” Strachan said with a grin. “It’s a strange place, this. You can’t see a bloody
thing.”

[13] Ambiguous Veron story
---------------------------------
Posted Monday, February 4, 2002 by bar-knee:
>From the SUN

'JUAN VERON was back at Lazio on Saturday — but denied he was there to talk about
rejoining the club, writes ERIC BEAUCHAMP.

The Manchester United midfielder has made no secret of his desire to return to the
Italian side one day.

Boss Alex Ferguson gave Veron the weekend off to help him recover from a knee injury
and the Argentine took the chance to jet to Rome.

The £28.1million man ended up popping in to Lazio's training ground.

After arriving with international team-mate Hernan Crespo, he chatted with sports
director Massimo Cragnotti.

Veron said: "I would be happy to return here — Lazio has an important place in my
heart."

[12] Fergie to stay on?
---------------------------------
Posted Monday, February 4, 2002 by bar-knee:
As the SUN goes with the growing rumour

'ALEX FERGUSON could answer a Manchester United SOS and stay on as boss for another
year.

The club have been trying to find a new manager for six months but fear they will not
be able to get the right man by the end of this season.

So they have come up with a stop-gap plan which involves Fergie extending his role as
United boss for another 12 months

SunSport understands preliminary talks have already taken place between United chiefs
and Ferguson, who had planned to retire in May.

We revealed last Friday Roma boss Fabio Capello was the club's top target to take over.

Capello had until the end of this month to tell United what he intends to do.

But the Reds fear he will want to see out the remaining 18 months of his deal with the
Italian champions.

A 12-month extension to Ferguson's reign will leave the door open for Capello to
arrive in the summer of 2003.

It could also bring Sven Goran Eriksson back into the equation.'

'“DAVID BECKHAM”
(Tune of Davey Crockett)
Born on a football singing M.U.F.C.,
Greatest crosser in the land of the free,
Raised in the north, so he’s as red as you or me,
When he scored from sixty yards, we knew what he would be.
David! David Beckham, the pride of Manchester!
David! David Beckham, the King of all England!

“THE BECKHAM SPECIAL”
(tune of The Midnight Special)
Let the Beckham Special, shine it’s light on me,
Let the Beckham Special, shine it’s ever loving light on me.

>From MUTV via the official site

'Two wins

"We’ve had a good week in the league. The players have shown great purpose, they’ve
attacked the opposition with great vigour and I’ve been very pleased with the last two
games."

Phil Neville's opener
"He usually gives us one goal per year so he’s doubled his tally. And I don’t see why
he can’t go and score a few more for us."

Sunderland’s equaliser
"It was a fantastic, marvellous strike, nobody expected that. We had a job to do after
that, and fortunately we managed to do it."

Ruud’s first goal
"It was wonderful, a great finish. It actually went in off the goalkeeper’s head! The
power in it gave the goalkeeper no chance."

Second half
"We kept a good momentum up, there was a good pace right through the match and I
thought it was quite an entertaining game.

"Sunderland did very well in terms of keeping possession and making us chase them, but
then my team did really well to win the ball back."

Change of tactics
"Sunderland tightened up in the second half. They played with a back four and three
central midfield players, and that stopped the flow of the game a bit.

"But I still think we played some good stuff. We could have scored maybe one or two
more, their goalkeeper made two good saves, one in particular from Paul Scholes. I was
pleased we kept the momentum going."

Playing surface
"It was difficult, and we’re having a few problems with the pitch. Some rain on it
today helped us because it stopped it from bobbling up."

David Beckham
"He was fantastic, he ran a million miles for us today, and with good quality to his
play.

"Some people can run all day but not give you any quality, but David had great quality
today."

Diego Forlan
"I’m very pleased with the way he’s settled in. He’s a very bright lad. He’s quick,
he’s got good feet, he moves all the time."

Arsenal result
"We heard the score with a few minutes to go, so we knew that Southampton had
equalised. So it’s been a good day for us in that way."

Title race
"I can’t see teams dropping off very easily. Usually it’s a two-horse race but there
are so many involved now I think it’s going to go right to the wire."

Break time
"It will be a good break for us. We can do some work in that some parts of our
training have to be addressed, we have a full week to do that.

"The players can enjoy the seven-day break from matches and get themselves prepared
for the Charlton game at The Valley next Sunday."

"I thought the free-kick was for obstruction, if there was any, and with my limited
knowledge of the rules you can't stick it in from an indirect free-kick. I had a word
with Mr Styles at half-time and I just wanted him to realise there were two teams on
the pitch. There were things that changed the game and goals changed the game. The
Beckham free-kick was a major turning point in the game because I thought at that
point we had a foothold in the game."

"I looked the other day and I couldn't believe we were in February. It seems to have
flown by this season. There are only 12 games to go now and we can't afford any more
mistakes. We've got to win every game now. If we can keep the run of form going we
should be in a pretty decent position come the end of the season. We believe we can
win it, but we still have 12 very hard matches to go. Obviously any help any other
teams can give us is welcome and Arsenal have dropped points against Southampton. But
we will maybe drop points before the end of the season and it's always like that in
the championship - you can't get too high and you can't get too low when you drop
points. You have just got to keep on plodding away, take any chance and stop making

Jordan is in discussion with a media company to screen her birth on the internet. They

Veron is to drive Forlan around to get to know the city and also help both players get
used to England.

Ruud diplomatically hinted that he doesn't want Van Gaal to get the Utd job, as Martin
O'Neill has dropped out of the race for getting the job as he wants to stay at Celtic.

[1] UNITED PLAYERS GET WIN BONUSSES - SHOCK REVELATION!
---------------------------------
Posted Monday, February 4, 2002 by redend:
Alex Plypin spills it in your lap:

Whichever 'source close to United' made such shocking revelations obviously knew what
they were doing. On the day that postmen were announced to have 'earned' 6p
performance bonuses by the idiotically branded consignia - I wonder how much the
pillocks who dreamt up this name got paid? - this was exactly the kind of story that
has some weak-willed mother bleating on the forecourt about the cost of replica
shirts.

'Piers Morgan actually gets a salary for writing complete shite'

is equally incredible - and he probably gets bonuses as well! Somehow, the skill
quotient between - say Phil Neville - and the balding sensationalist also does not get
a mention.

As someone who gets paid nowhere near his worth - and I have a choice as well! - I
don't give a flying fart what the players get paid. Money does not motivate me that
much, and I refuse to bet on United - or even predict results - because the joy of
winning would not be enhanced, or the pain of losing made much worse. The last time
that I did was as a callow student in Sheffield before the '76 Cup Final, and I still
bear the scars of The Rat's offside goal.

PS It's good to see that Neville junior is making good use of his palookah. Driving
past his palace yesterday, the Bushwhacker has erected the mother of all marquees in
his front 'garden'. I have not yet got my invite, so I don't know the cause of the
celebration.

"I was at a dinner with Alex last night, to raise money for a hospital. I'm sure he
doesn't worry about me and I've no reason to worry about him at the moment. But next
year, please God, if we keep doing things right and keep making right decisions,
players keep responding and fans get behind us, we'll have those derby matches back."

"Who knows, Alex may still be there, because I don't think that's definite, is it? I'd
like him to stay, yes. It wouldn't be the same without him there, would it?"
