[38] Polish legend slates Barthez

Polish FA vice-president Zbigniew Boniek:

"France are the best team in the world. But Barthez, who I like very much, is not the
best goalkeeper. He can vary between playing like the best in the world one day, then
playing like someone in the park on a Sunday. He is perfectly prepared physically, but
he is unstable."

"I came back down to sort out my future. I spoke to Sir Alex and he allowed me the
opportunity to sign on for Livingston for another month. I didn't hesitate - I jumped
at the chance because I have loved every minute of my time with Livingston. It has
been absolutely brilliant and the lads anf the management team have been first class.
The club is buzzing both on and off the field and it has a tremendous career move for
me to play in Scotland. Things could not have worked out any better as far as I'm
concerned."

"We've had a lot of success over the last nine or ten years, and a lot of that has
been down to the boss. You don't know whether things would have been the same. We
would have hoped the success would have continued, but you could never have been sure.
Now we're carrying on with the same manager and we've been in the top two for the last
nine years, winning trophies, and I don't think he's going to let that slip. I
wouldn't be playing football for Manchester United if it wasn't for him. It's as
simple as that because he gave me my chance and I'm not so sure there would have been
other managers who would have done that. He paved the way for a lot of us to come
through."

Posted Wednesday, February 13, 2002 by bar-knee:
"My knee has improved, but I've had to work on it, doing stretching exercises and
weight training to help the muscles around it. Once you've had major surgery on any
part of your body, it will probably never be the same. That's fact, no matter how well
you recover. Doing the stretching and the weights is something I will have to maintain
for the rest of my career, but that's a small price to pay if it prevents anything
further from happening. I just have to make sure I keep up the advice I've been given
by the specialist. If I do that then I'll be okay, and if nothing further does happen
then I will be delighted. But I'm well aware things can change."

[34] Silliest story yet

Posted Wednesday, February 13, 2002 by bar-knee:
>From the Mirror

'FANS are pestering Brooklyn Beckham for his autograph - even though he is only two
years old.

At his dad David's last home game for Manchester United, Brooklyn's mum Victoria was
surrounded by fans armed with autograph books.

But when she realised it was her young son they were after she burst out giggling,
telling the star-struck fans: "Don't be so ridiculous, he's only two."

One onlooker at Old Trafford last weekend for Sunderland's visit said: "It was very
funny watching Victoria's reaction. She thought it was a wind-up at first, but then
realised it was for real.

"She obviously couldn't believe anyone could be so stupid as to ask a toddler for his
autograph. But she took it very well."

Brooklyn celebrates his third birthday next month and has seen his mum and dad sign
their name hundreds of times.

But although he is said to love drawing, he is far too young to have mastered writing
his own name.

But if may not be too many years before Brooklyn is signing his autograph.

His proud grandfather Ted - David's dad - says he is kicking a ball about already.

"He is much better than David was at that age," he said of his grandson.'

playing for England was hard work. He said you didn't get the credit you deserve but
the pressure was greater than playing at club level. When I won the first cap, I never
dreamed of getting 50. But if I make the squad for the World Cup, it will be my fourth
leading tournament. It would be nice to be in a position some day to win one. That
would be worth any number of caps."

"Both Gary and Phillip have had a lot of stick and they have not deserved it. Gary is
coming up to his 50th cap and he is worth everything he has achieved so far - and will
do in the future. It's not been noted really, but he's been playing exceptionally well
this season at centre-half. This will be a special game for him and he deserves it. He
is more of a talker on the pitch than me, more of an organiser, that's why I always
see him as a captain at United. I thought he would be the England captain, although
I've been lucky enough to be given the chance."

' A total of 12 suspected football hooligans have been arrested on their way to
England's friendly with Holland in Amsterdam.

Officers have been carrying out the operation at the Kent ports and Channel Tunnel.

Three men have so far received football banning orders for two years, a police
spokesman says.

A 39-year-old from Herne Bay in Kent; a 27-year-old from Coventry; and a 34-year-old
from Stoke on Trent all received the bans when they appeared before magistrates in
Folkestone.

Another nine will appear before magistrates in the town.

A spokesman for Kent Police said: "This has been an ongoing operation since Monday. So
far we have not found any weapons or drugs."

times and he has been remarkable in every match. I think the French are the great
favourites of the World Cup. I am lucky enough to see their players on English grounds

[23] Ruud on no World cup in his life
---------------------------------
Posted Wednesday, February 13, 2002 by bar-knee:
"It is going to be very hard for me this summer. The whole world will be watching the
best players in the greatest tournament of the lot. Right now, I don't feel as if I
will be able even to switch on the TV. I will try not to, but I probably will. It's
our fault we are not there. Yes, we all feel terribly disappointed, though there is no
jealousy of England. It is just so strange how fate works. How we should beat England
2-0 at White Hart Lane and then, in the next game, lose 1-0 to the Republic of Ireland
while England were killing Germany 5-1. England came back from a bad position in the
group to qualify and that says a lot about how they were able to handle the
disappointment of losing to us. It is important for us to learn that now."

[22] Ruud on his injury

my future. I never want to think about it again. Yes, it was that bad."

[21] Ruud on Fergie and our title charge

Posted Wednesday, February 13, 2002 by bar-knee:
"I have said before that I'm delighted he's not retiring. He was the man who took me
to the club and I wanted more than just one season with him. Yet even one season would
have been good enough for me. I don't know exactly what changed everything around for
us in the championship. I don't think anyone does. All I do know is that we beat Derby
5-0, we then won 1-0 at Middlesbrough and I got back to the dressing room telling
myself 'Let's keep this going'. But not even I thought we would win 11 out of 12.
And, yes, there are still another 11 to go as we hit the most important stage of the
season. I joined United for exactly this sort of situation. And when I look around me,
I see other players made for this sort of situation as well. We have experience of
life at the top like no one else."

[20] Ruud totally happy
---------------------------------
Posted Wednesday, February 13, 2002 by bar-knee:
"I never imagined it would happen as it has. Having been out for a year with an injury
that could have ended my career, I could not have dreamed it would be like this. Even
the bad times are good. Even Alex Ferguson shouting at me is good! Yes, he shouts at
me like everyone else. But that makes me happy as well. And why not? I am having the
greatest moments of my career in the best team I could play for. The way our midfield
deliver the ball, the tremendous style with which we attack, you couldn't ask for
more. In the first training session I ever had at United, I realised these players
knew each other like no other team. They didn't even have to look to know what the
other players were doing.
Now that the boss has decided to stay on, this will all continue. It is brilliant
news."

support play of Paul Scholes and Roy Keane ... how can you fail?"

"The title race is too interesting for my liking. I preferred it last year when we
were something like 15 points clear, but we've lost too many games and it could go
right to the last match. If it has to be done that way, so be it. I'd rather be a few
points clear, but that's not the case. If we have to win it on goal difference we
will. It's still the same. A championship is a championship. It's great for neutrals

first-team games for us and has not looked out of place. He has been involved in the
first-team squad for most of the season. He was unfortunate to pick up an injury three
or four weeks ago, but he's been back training for a while. I thought he might have
been in the squad, because this is an opportunity to look at new players. But there
are still three more friendlies coming up and I think John has a great chance of going
to the World Cup. Hopefully, he will get an opportunity to show what he can do. As
I've said already, I think he is one for the present. He is as good as any of the
centre-halves we have in the squad."

serenity. He makes all the difference in his reading of the play. From this point of
view, he has no equal in the world. He is more demanding with me than the others. He
speaks English badly but, when he expresses himself just in French, I know that it is

Because of him they are among the favourites and they have a good chance. I'm not in
the least bit surprised that Eriksson has achieved the results he has in the later

succeed. At the same time he is a very clever and intelligent coach. What he has

Chadha is now trying to organise re-shoots in time for the film's release in April.

Victoria Beckham is also expected to contribute a number of songs to the soundtrack'
