[46] Tristan happy for Becks
---------------------------------
Posted Friday, April 5, 2002 by bar-knee:
"It is good news and I am very pleased to know there is nothing wrong with him. He is
an important player for his team and if he has anything serious it would upset me. All
of this is very annoying, it seems it is better not to speak to anybody because what
they write is different to what you said. I have always said I am happy in La Coruna
and want to do important things here."

"People are giving too much importance to what happened. It was a tackle where I
arrived a bit late, but it was something that happens. I am very sorry and that's all.
I told Beckham I was sorry in the game and also through an English newspaper and I
think it should end there. People who know me, know it was not a normal tackle for me
to make. I am hurt by the way the issue has been treated, what do people want me to
do, go down on my knees to apologise?"

[42] Big Fat Ron tips Mickeys
---------------------------------
Posted Friday, April 5, 2002 by bar-knee:
Hmm

>From the Guardian - Ron Atkinson

'After the results Manchester United and Liverpool achieved this week I'd have my
money on an all-English Champions League semi-final. But if one of our teams are going
to slip up in the second leg, I feel it's more likely to be Sir Alex Ferguson's side.

That might sound strange given that United are at home to Deportivo La Coruna with a
2-0 advantage, whereas Liverpool travel to Bayer Leverkusen leading 1-0. But I always
fancy Liverpool away in Europe and United can't yet consider themselves home and dry.

They'll be without two world-class midfielders in Roy Keane and Paul Scholes, because
of injury and suspension, and possibly without David Beckham and Juan Sebastian Veron
because of knocks. To lose all four would be a big blow against a side of Deportivo's
quality.

A personal hunch is that Beckham will be fit. Diego Tristan's tackle on him was
scandalous but I don't think it will be a long-term problem for the England captain.
If he does recover, United would have a strong midfield with Nicky Butt and Ryan
Giggs. Veron would be the ideal fourth man but if he's not around I know who I'd draft
in.

Phil Neville has the know-how and the experience for the occasion. Although he's not a
natural midfielder he could slot into the middle alongside Butt or even operate on the
right, with Beckham in the playmaker role.

The shame for United is the tie isn't out of sight. They gave a sensational
performance on Tuesday and Giggs had two smashing situations in the second half. If
he'd tucked one away Deportivo would be coming only for a cup of tea and a shopping
expedition.

As it is, the game's still open. Deportivo's 2-0 win at Highbury last month showed
what they're capable of and they beat United at Old Trafford earlier in the season. If
they get the first goal there may be some jitters.

Even at 2-0 United have the problem of whether to charge for a third goal or sit on
what they've got. I think they have to go forward positively but without being
cavalier.

If they overcommit and leave big gaps in midfield the Spaniards have players - Juan
Carlos Valeron and Sergio - who can exploit that. Butt will be an important figure in
the holding role.'

[37] Ruud a winner
---------------------------------
Posted Friday, April 5, 2002 by bar-knee:
"It is the medals I want to win most of all. As a professional you want to win. You
want to do well at the highest level and win silverware. Winning trophies is a big
goal for me at Manchester United. Football is not an individual sport. You want to
play well, score goals and do well as a team because the team is what it is all about.
If the two come together and I score goals and United win something then that is the
ideal situation, but we will see what happens. I hope it does come together and we get
everything I have in my mind to win and we do everything we want to achieve"

they said on Hyypia too :-

"Hyypia moved to Anfield for £2.5m three years ago, and many consider him a certainty
to be named PFA Player of the Year next week. "

Ooops wrong again, he didn't make the shortlist !

Cheers Rich

[29] Bergkamp not bothered about Spurs
---------------------------------
Posted Friday, April 5, 2002 by bar-knee:
"Admittedly we would not have chosen to face Tottenham at this time, because games
against them are unpredictable. The gulf that exists between us and them in the league
ceases to apply in these games. I have to say, though, that all the talk about the
rivalry might be a big deal for them, but it isn't really for us. We don't want to win
this game because of local pride. We want to win it so we can lift the Premiership
trophy next month. Perhaps the Spurs people will be thinking about seeing Sol Campbell
in an Arsenal shirt. He will probably face some abuse but it won't bother him. He
doesn't need to make any special gesture to answer his critics. The fact is that he
moved here to win trophies and further his career. The way things are going he looks
set to win the double in his first season here. I think that is answer enough to
anyone who wants to abuse him."

[27] Teddy expects call from ex United mates
---------------------------------
Posted Friday, April 5, 2002 by bar-knee:
"I don't know whether or not I'll get some calls, but you never know... I think United
are capable of winning all of their games and lifting the title because they have the
experience - whether they do it or not is a different matter. But it's the most
exciting race for years and will go down to the wire with quite a few twists and turns
left yet - and to write United off would be wrong. I still think any one of the top
three can win the league and it makes it exciting for us to be playing two of the
contenders."

"To write United off would be wrong. Our run-in means that we've got a lot to play for
until the end of the season. Our season hasn't fizzled out because we've got two of
the teams going for the championship still to play and we will have a major say in the
title. We will concentrate on ourselves and getting into Europe but to do that we have
to take maximum points from our matches which makes those games against Arsenal and
Liverpool even more interesting."

[24] Strange timing
---------------------------------

looks like Capello's staying at Roma until 2005 - convenient timing

>From Reuters

AS Roma coach Fabio Capello has agreed a two-year extension
to his contract in a deal that will keep him at the club until June 2005. Capello,
whose original deal ran out at the end of next season, had been linked with a move to
Spanish club Barcelona.

Roma said in a statement to Milan's stock market on Thursday that Capello would be
paid 3.87 million euros (US$3.43 million) a season after the coach and the club
reached "common agreement to extend their relationship for two further seasons."

'If I was Houllier, I'd have a major headache going into the second leg. I could
hardly tell who were the home team, and I started to ask myself if a different
Liverpool side had been out there from the one who beat us 3-2 in the Super Cup at the
start of the season. I was also surprised to see a big lad like Emile Heskey being
forced to play so wide. He'd have been far more useful as a centre forward. Losing 1-0
is a dangerous result for Leverkusen but, if they repeat their second-half
performance, they still have a good chance.'
