[24] Fergie on Becks's Glasgow chances
---------------------------------
Posted Monday, April 29, 2002 by tb:
"It's a difficult one because he's still got the pot on his leg.

"He will probably have a scan at the end of the week to look at it further, but it's
difficult to say.

"I would like to think he's got a chance and you always keep the hope going.

"One thing with David is he won't need a lot of time to get fit."

[23] Keano on the Turin spirit
---------------------------------
Posted Monday, April 29, 2002 by tb:
"It's only half-time as they say and we now need to produce a performance like we did
in Turin against Juventus in '99."

"It's the same kind of scenario to Turin in '99. We were fairly outplayed against Juve
three years ago at Old Trafford.

"But we got a draw in the end and then won in Italy. Fingers crossed we can do it
again. It will be a test of character, but the players are more than capable of doing
it."

---------------------------------
[22] Fergie on the yellow card situation
---------------------------------
Posted Monday, April 29, 2002 by tb:
"Roy won't even think about it - and we have three other players on yellow cards as
well, Laurent Blanc, Nicky Butt and Ruud van Nistelrooy."

"In a situation like this you have to get on and play the best you can, and hope that
you have a referee who understands what missing a final would mean - and when I say
that, I am thinking about both sides.

"There is a lot at stake on Tuesday and I hope the referee understands that. It would
be tragic if Roy Keane were to miss out again."

"He embodies the character of him in his team. They will do their best and that is all
we can ask for.

[18] Ruud on Leverkusen
---------------------------------
Posted Monday, April 29, 2002 by tb:
'M' word alert!

"It was fantastic to win and score at Ipswich but now we have a massive game in
Germany against Bayer Leverkusen.

"One game and one win and you are in the final. It will be a very difficult game but
with our quality it is possible to do it.

"Leverkusen lost on Saturday while we were winning but Tuesday is a game on it’s own.
It will be fantastic. We know what we have to do and that is the most important thing."

---------------------------------
[18] Ruud on Tractor boys game
---------------------------------
Posted Monday, April 29, 2002 by tb:
"We deserved to win the match. A lot of players were left at home with little injuries
and others were on the bench who normally play. But that was a big compliment to the
lads who played at Portman Road. It was a fantastic performance.

"We knew Liverpool were a point ahead at the start of the day and we wanted them to
slip up and they did. But we still had to win ourselves otherwise we’d have gained no
advantage from Liverpool losing.

"We have put the pressure back on Arsenal and that’s what we’ve tried to do. We’ve
tried to win all our games left and we’ve done well.

---------------------------------
[17] Ruud: I don't wear Speedo's
---------------------------------
Posted Monday, April 29, 2002 by tb:
"I went to head the ball and the defender pulled me down so I couldn’t head it."

"It was a clear decision to me. I then just focused on the penalty kick."

---------------------------------
[16] Fergie: We will do better
---------------------------------
Posted Monday, April 29, 2002 by tb:
"We will play better tomorrow night

"Away from home we have been terrific in Europe and we will perform much better in
Germany than we did at Old Trafford. Hopefully that’s good enough to win the match."

---------------------------------
[15] Fergie: It's the normal Utd way of doing things
---------------------------------
Posted Monday, April 29, 2002 by tb:
“They were celebrating at the end of the game and that gave me a bit of hope because
my belief in life is that you don’t take things for granted,” he said.

“They had a great result and nobody is disputing that but they may have reflected
themselves afterwards that they had overdone it.

On the German 'celebration'

“I won’t use it as part of my team talk but everyone saw it.

“Now we are talking about winning one game of football and Manchester United are
definitely capable of doing that.

“It probably is a Manchester United situation - we are in having to do it the hard
way.

“It is a semi-final and you are only one kick away from the final and I think we have
a smashing chance. “We were all sitting in the dressing room at Old Trafford
disappointed three years ago after Juventus and thinking what a mountain we had to
climb. Look what happened.

[14] Phil on Gary and WC
---------------------------------
Posted Monday, April 29, 2002 by tb:
>From Ananova:

Gary Neville has set himself a two-week deadline in his race to be fit for the World
Cup.

The England defender is expected to miss the finals after breaking the second
metatarsal bone in his left foot last week.

Manchester United's medical team believe Neville will be out for at least six weeks,
which would rule him out of England's opening game against Sweden on June 2.

Neville has refused to give up all hope yet and is praying he can make a swift
recovery and his brother Phil says he feels he will know his fate in a fortnight's
time.

"I think he's very cautious about it," said Phil, who is set to deputise for him in
Tuesday'sa Champions League return against Bayer Leverkusen, on MUTV.

"He's in a lot of pain at the moment with it being broken.

"But I think it's too early to comment either way.

"I think in two weeks' time he said he will know in himself if he's going to be fit.

"If he's not going to be fit, 100% fit, for the first game, then there's no point
going he said.

"Knowing Gary he will not go out there if he's not 100% fit."

---------------------------------
[13] Ronny, Larry fit
---------------------------------
Posted Monday, April 29, 2002 by tb:
>From Ananova:

Ronny Johnsen and Laurent Blanc have recovered from injury to boost Manchester United
ahead of their Champions League semi-final showdown with Bayer Leverkusen.

Johnsen has been out for the last three weeks with a hamstring injury.

Blanc returns after twisting his knee in last week's 2-2 first-leg draw against
Leverkusen at Old Trafford.

Sir Alex Ferguson also confirmed that all the players who sat out the win at Ipswich
with various minor knocks are fit.

Fabien Barthez, Juan Sebastian Veron, Mikael Silvestre, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, Ryan
Giggs and Paul Scholes, who all did not start at Portman Road, return.

Ferguson said: "Ronny Johnsen is back and everyone else is fit too."

United flew out to Germany with a formidable squad and only long-term casualties Gary
Neville and David Beckham were missing for the semi-final second leg in the BayArena.

[11] Yonner wants to do us a favour?
---------------------------------
Posted Monday, April 29, 2002 by tb:
Allardyce:

"United have done us a favour, so it would be nice to repay them by getting a result
against Arsenal.

"But regardless of United's win at Ipswich, it was always our intention to do our best
against Arsenal.

"From our point of view, we want to take another scalp to add to our victories against
United and Liverpool this season.

"If we can survive in the Premiership and point to wins over United, Liverpool and
Arsenal, then it would make a lot of people very happy.

"We have proved this season that results can go against expectations and so have other
clubs.

"The team that wins the title this year will be worthy champions - whoever it is."

[9] Fergie utters the 'M' word
---------------------------------
Posted Monday, April 29, 2002 by tb:
'If something happens to Arsenal on Monday, then our game against them is massive.
There won't have been a bigger game in English football in the last 10 years.'

[8] Fergie on Juan
---------------------------------
Posted Monday, April 29, 2002 by tb:
'We're nursing him along, we left him behind for Ipswich to make sure we can build on
his level of fitness. He tired against Leverkusen in the second half and that's not
usual for him. This weekend we're going to train him really hard to make sure he is
right for Tuesday.'

---------------------------------
[7] Fergie looks to his party people
---------------------------------
Posted Monday, April 29, 2002 by tb:
'When the really big games come along you know the Keanes and David Beckhams of this
world, while not always delivering, certainly add something to the party.

'The other night in the second half we looked nervous. We probably missed their
assurance on the park. This time we will play much better, I'm sure of that. Midfield
will be the key to what happens in Germany.'

---------------------------------
[6] Giggsy glad to hand armband back
---------------------------------
Posted Monday, April 29, 2002 by tb:
'I'll be only too happy to hand back the armband to Keano. The return in Leverkusen is
such a massive game for us and you want your best players with you. Roy is, without
any doubt, our inspiration, so influential in what we do, and I'm sure he'll live up
to all of that.

'It's a tremendous feeling to have someone of his stature going over there with you.
Three years ago in Juventus, Keano pulled it off for us in this kind of situation. We
hope he can do something similar this time. He has healed fast and pushed himself
when, really, in his head he was maybe just thinking of the final. He and Scholes
missed out on the European Cup last time, and we all want to get them there.'

---------------------------------
[5] Fergie on Keano
---------------------------------
Posted Monday, April 29, 2002 by tb:
'It's remarkable that Roy is back for us in three weeks. It was a tear in his
hamstring and we all thought that was the finish of him for this season.

'But Roy has been flying in training and working like a beast. His recovery has been
helped by oxidisation treatment, in which he places himself in a cylinder for
four-and-a-half hours a day. He did that in separate 90-minute sessions for three
consecutive days before having a week's break, then going through it again.'

---------------------------------
[3] Dennis Bergkamp is unwell
---------------------------------
Posted Monday, April 29, 2002 by tb:
"Unlike Manchester United, who've won so much in recent years, we are a team that is
sick of finishing second.

"We've been runners-up in the Uefa Cup, FA Cup and league many times and now we want
to finish first for a change.

"Look at someone like Thierry, he's perhaps the best striker in Europe, if not the
world, he's won all there is to win on the international front but has yet to win a
medal at Highbury. That sort of hunger gives us the edge."

Bayer have several injury worries as both Oliver Neuville and Jens Nowotny were forced

"Sir Alex Ferguson and I have had a great relationship for years. He always tells me I
should come and join him at United, he's half serious but going to English football is
something I have always wanted to do.

"Sir Alex and I speak on the phone. We talk about football and other things. I think
we are on the same wavelength.

"He is a great manager, a great person and a great friend. The move wouldn't be right

The "Best team in the world" who were nailed on certainties for the treble in their

Valencia with only 2 to play. Lets hope they finish empty handed. Looks like they will

Cup, and almost certainly by Valencia in the League. What's the cliché about things

[15] That Penalty ...

Posted Sunday, April 28, 2002 by redend:
Strange how on Match of the Day (OK, ITV's The Premiership) last night, and also on
the news, footage from the high camera angle from behind the goal was mysteriously
unavailable. Is it a coincidence that this footage (shown live on Sky) also clearly
showed a soft, but definitely deliberate, push in the back on Ruud. This action was
obscured from the other angles they showed and replayed several times.

Also interesting that the high camera angle behind the goal (there's a shorter
technical name for this isn't there .. anoraks, don't write in) was suddenly available
again a minute later when they wanted to show Ruud's perfect pen crashing into the
net.

Very convenient to keep the ABU nation on the boil.

[14] Kenyon denies Sven approach

Posted Sunday, April 28, 2002 by redend:
... well sort of. Actually, at the end of the interview on 5 Live I was still none the
wiser whether he was actually unambiguously denying the claim in Michael Crick's new
Fergie book, and something we all suspected, that United approached Sven to replace
Fergie ... before Fergie saw sense and signed a new contract.

With Peter Kenyon you're often left feeling unsure exactly what he did mean by what he
said. Is this the result of intensive coaching by PR Guru, Paddy Harveson? I think we
should be told.

"Obviously it's not the best result for us but you never know what is going to happen

[10] Wembley deadline
---------------------------------
Posted Sunday, April 28, 2002 by redend:
Ananova:

The FA have been warned there are just a few days left to sort the finance of the
Wembley national stadium project (bag of sh*te).

The Department of Culture, Media and Sport confirmed that the end of April deadline
for Government support set last December still stood.

The plans were thrown into further confusion, if that is possible, on Friday when
Barclays announced that it was pulling out as a contender to finance the project,
after learning the FA was also negotiating with the German bank, WestLB.

Is there no limit to the London incompetence which finally means they have to admit
defeat & put the stadium in the Midlands or North?

by the highly respected MP for Gorton, Gerald Kaufman MP.

Kaufman's early day motion on the subject was such a classic we think you should be

JUSTICE AND LEEDS UNITED FOOTBALLERS
17.12.01
Kaufman/Gerald
That this House expresses its disgust at the travesty of justice enacted at Hull Crown
Court; calls on the Attorney-General to conduct an inquiry into why the Crown
Prosecution Service, which the Director of Public Prosecutions has admitted is
institutionally racist, did not prosecute for racial attack the gang of white men who
carried out a vicious attack on an Asian youth; further calls on the Attorney-General
to consider whether Lee Bowyer, labelled by Mr Justice Henriques as a multiple liar,
should be prosecuted for perjury; condemns Leeds United Football Club for the trivial
sanctions, amounting to a slap on the wrist, it is imposing on the convicted criminal
Woodgate and the branded liar Bowyer; calls on the Football Association in no
circumstances to include Woodgate in an England team; and takes note of the message
sent out to all the boys and young men who regard leading footballers as role models,
namely that, if you are rich and famous, you can be a drunken, lying, !
violent lout who is able to get away with near-murder.
