--------------------------------- [10] Nicky Butt on himself --------------------------------- Posted Wednesday, June 12, 2002 by bar-knee: "I'm 100% fit physically, although you would hope for a few more games under your belt from a match-fitness point of view but there's no time for that and you've just got to do the best you can. Naturally I was disappointed not to play in the first game because you want to play in the World Cup but I had only trained for three or four days beforehand and could understand the manager's decision." --------------------------------- [9] Beckham on Butt --------------------------------- Posted Wednesday, June 12, 2002 by bar-knee: "I've always said that Nicky has the ability to play for England for a lot of years to come, but I think he showed why against Argentina. It was just a case of him needing the chance to show what he could do, and when he got it, he took it. With Nicky playing like that and holding the middle, it gave Scholesy the chance to go forward. He was the rock in midfield for us." --------------------------------- [8] Red News summer offer --------------------------------- Posted Wednesday, June 12, 2002 by bar-knee: Red News published 9 issues last season, of which we have limited stocks of 8 still available. I do not have an intention to leave, it is Barca who have to speak about this. I feel very happy at Barcelona." --------------------------------- [4] The future for France --------------------------------- Posted Wednesday, June 12, 2002 by bar-knee: Michel Platini "We must now work on reconstruction, say thanks, bravo, goodbye and see you." --------------------------------- [3] Betting offer --------------------------------- Posted Wednesday, June 12, 2002 by bar-knee: Thursday 13th June - Mexico v Italy Spicy Pizza If there is a Red Card in the game, we’ll refund all losing Correct Score and Scorecast bets. Anyone who recalls the infamous Germany Austria game, where they `fought out' a tame draw in order to deny Algeria progress knows what it is really all about. If anyone were to harbour any doubts, the farcical pre-emptive `draw' allows pretentious teams the opportunity to plan their route to the final. An impressive performance against one of the tournament favourites in a closed air-conditioned stadium completely obliterates the stodgy breathless second half in the heat of the day against European also-rans. Tomorrow's [Wednesday] game, in the heat of the day, with several players carrying injuries, and against a team with nothing to play for except pride may not be the gleefully expected victory roll that will send `our boys' on to immortal glory. The heart-warming innocence of the millions of South Korean fans is tempered by the fact that, north of the 38th parallel, nobody acknowledges that there is anything of import going on.The `inclusive' insistence that 2 separate nations who don't really get on that well share the competition has just resulted in tit-for-tat attempts at upstaging the other. Not far away, jingoistic sabre-rattling that may bring the whole world into oblivion, is ignored - can you imagine the media hype of an India/Pakistan World Cup match? Football is not a matter of life and death, it is more important than that!! Rivaldo - one of the World's most exquisite players, publicly reveals that his cheekbone is connected to his shin bone. Another World Class player, whose only intention was to train professionally and try to win, is sent home in `disgrace'. Several players - or various nationalities - mutter darkly that they are prepared to do `whatever it takes' - viz. CHEAT - to achieve the desired result. There is one thing, however. I can't remember the last time that the Ingerlish were responsible for eliminating the Italians from a World Cup. Whatever it takes, is evidently the universally popular Graham Poll!! --------------------------------- [27] Chesterfield pre-season details --------------------------------- Posted Tuesday, June 11, 2002 by bar-knee: Don't say I'll get my first Chubbing before the season has even started! 'JOHN DUNCANS TESTIMONIAL Chesterfield v A Select Manchester United XI Saltergate, Saturday 27 July, kick off 3pm We have received an allocation of approximately 500 tickets priced £15.00 adults and £10.00 under 16s/over 65s. And we thought they were doing away with postal applications this season anyway?! --------------------------------- [26] Danny Mills wants Gary Nev's England spot --------------------------------- Posted Tuesday, June 11, 2002 by bar-knee: "It is now up to me to keep this spot in the side as long as possible by playing to the best of my ability every time I go out there. Unfortunately, Gary Neville picked up that injury and there is no doubt he would have been in the squad, possibly he could even have been in the starting line-up, if fit. But that is how it goes sometimes in football. I have to take this chance. He will be fit for the European Championship qualifiers and when he is back I intend to fight him all the way for his shirt. I do not want to give this up lightly. Obviously, you want to be involved in as many games as possible and it was a little bit difficult to watch the 5-1 win in Germany from the stands. But it was special for me to play in the Argentinian game. That match will go down in history and I'm just glad to have been playing in it." --------------------------------- [25] Wallwork to decide his transfer --------------------------------- Posted Tuesday, June 11, 2002 by bar-knee: between West Brom and Portsmouth Neil Sillett, his agent "The decision is now down to Ronnie. But two other Premiership clubs have shown an interest. West Brom and Portsmouth are the two clubs who have made offers so far. Portsmouth have come to us with an offer that will be very difficult to turn down. They are signing lots of players and they have made their intentions clear. The Premiership is very appealing to Ronnie and West Brom have made a firm offer, but Ronnie may want to see who else they sign. They haven't signed anybody else as yet and he wants to know that West Brom will not stay in the Premiership for just the one season. We are in constant contact with West Brom, but we still have other clubs to talk to. Two other Premiership clubs have shown an interest but they haven't come back to me as yet." --------------------------------- [24] Bits and bobs --------------------------------- Posted Tuesday, June 11, 2002 by bar-knee: Uruguay manager Victor Pua resigns, but not because of the shock of Forlan's superb goal. Millwall chairman on away fan ban Theo Paphitis "This is a substantial blow to the football club - the cost must be approaching millions of pounds. It could not come at a worse time after Carlton and Granada failed to honour the television contract. Football clubs are facing one of the biggest dangers to their future ever and we have this problem on top of that. It will damage our finances and a membership scheme will mean we lose our casual supporters, but we have to look at our future and we've no other option but to take this action - we have to make sure we can retain our players. These are unprecedented measures but we feel we must take them. The idiots must not be allowed to ruin the reputation of this club." --------------------------------- [23] Forlan gutted about that last minute miss by Morales --------------------------------- Posted Tuesday, June 11, 2002 by bar-knee: "I just can't talk about Richard Morales' last-minute chance. I bet even he can't explain how he missed it. We leave the World Cup with a bitter-sweet taste, which is understandable after making such an effort that proved not to be enough. We definitely had chances to beat Senegal. We started the second half with true aims of recovering. Luckily, Morales scored early in the half and after that it was clear that the miracle was possible. We left a good impression at the end, but I would have liked to be in the second round. The worst thing now is that we will have to wait for another four years - so much time." --------------------------------- [22] Teddy on Scholes --------------------------------- Posted Tuesday, June 11, 2002 by bar-knee: "For me Paul Scholes was absolute class, he adapts to any position. In my view there is no better player in centre midfield than him anywhere in the world. He showed that when he moved inside. It was a shame for Owen Hargreaves to go off but when Scholes came into central role with Trevor Sinclair going wide we had a great shape and Scholes was the orchestrator.'' --------------------------------- [21] Millwall goes Big Brother to stop big bother --------------------------------- Posted Tuesday, June 11, 2002 by bar-knee: >From Ananova 'Six clubs have been banned from taking away supporters to Millwall next season. Supporters of Wolves, Burnley, Nottingham Forest, Stoke, Portsmouth and Leicester will not be allowed at the New Den next season. Four matches will also be made all-ticket for away supporters and will kick-off at a time when at least one hour of daylight exists after the final whistle. They are the games involving Coventry, Derby, Reading and Crystal Palace. The club also confirmed that in order to buy a ticket for any Millwall game during 2002-3 season supporters will have to be either season ticket holders or members of the Millwall Supporters Club.' --------------------------------- [20] A Red Perspective - Dare I say it --------------------------------- Posted Tuesday, June 11, 2002 by bar-knee: And Break with all the hype but am I the only one thinking that this World Cup has been, well, crap. Not in terms of excitement and occasional individual skill but in the general performance of most teams. Once again I'm left thinking that United would have a chance playing against most, if not all, of the teams as game after game the anticipation and eageness to see a supposed world class team leaves you wondering afterwards: 'They're not very good are they'. I am amazed at the amount of misses, the amount of stray passes being played by most sides and it does leave you wondering just how is going to or has reached a peak. Big teams will go out at the first stage - Brazil look good and nobody else seems prepared to want it enough. Great to watch but the best in the world? I doubt it. Peter Shaw --------------------------------- [19] Blanc blasts French --------------------------------- Posted Tuesday, June 11, 2002 by bar-knee: "This team has to question itself individually and collectively. Some should wonder whether they should keep playing for the national team. All of them had the motivation, but not the means to achieve their ambitions. What they showed today was just not good enough." --------------------------------- [18] 5-a-side tourny --------------------------------- Posted Tuesday, June 11, 2002 by bar-knee: EUROWORLD TRAVEL FORMALLY AMBASSADOR TRAVEL SECOND ANNUAL MANCHESTER UNITED SUPPORTERS 5 A'SIDE FOOTBALL TOURNAMENT BLACKPOOL 6 JULY 2002 For further details please contact us on Tel - 0870 330 0400 Fax - 0870 330 1007 e'mail - [EMAIL PROTECTED] --------------------------------- [17] Barthez, Forlan woe --------------------------------- Posted Tuesday, June 11, 2002 by bar-knee: France 0 Denmark 2 Senegal 3 Uruguay 3 (it was 3-0 at half-time) France first holders since Brazil in '66 to go out at first stage.
