[30] Becks praises England fans
---------------------------------
Posted Sunday, June 23, 2002 by bar-knee:
"The fans have been absolutely magnificent from the minute we arrived in Japan and we
will never forget the support they have given us during this World Cup. Wherever we
have travelled, they have been with us and we would also like to thank Japan as a
nation for the way they have supported us. It has felt as if we have almost been the
home team and it has been fantastic to walk out to every game and see the stadium
filled with the red and white of England. Now they have turned out in many numbers to
say farewell to us and once again I can only say thank you and they are big reason why
many of us will be coming back here."

[29] Vieri wants Nesta
---------------------------------
Posted Sunday, June 23, 2002 by bar-knee:
Christian Vieri

"If Inter want to win next season, we need Nesta. I'm just a player and not a director
but if Inter want to win next season, we still need a final purchase. We need
Alessandro Nesta, he would perfectly complete our team. I'm still angry about the end
of the season. That's obvious considering how things went on that last day. The club
must sign only great players. Inter must imitate Real, they buy only great stars like
Luis Figo and Zinedine Zidane. Of course, choosing the players for the new season is
not my job. But the players we take must be very, very strong."

---------------------------------
[28] Cantona knocks French coach
---------------------------------
Posted Sunday, June 23, 2002 by bar-knee:
"I hope he did not pick the squad because of Adidas. He was too feverish to make the
right changes. He should have lined up two creative midfielders on the wings and
played 4-4-2 instead of sticking to his 4-2-3-1. But he preferred to stick to the same
tactical scheme."

---------------------------------
[27] Ronaldo praises Rio
---------------------------------
Posted Sunday, June 23, 2002 by bar-knee:
"He's not like any other English centre-back. My job is to get past people and score
goals but he was in control against me. He's good also with the ball at his feet. I
think he was the best centre-back in the tournament."

---------------------------------
[26] Sven on taking Becks to the World Cup
---------------------------------
Posted Sunday, June 23, 2002 by bar-knee:
"I would not change anything at all. I would gamble just the same. I would do exactly
the same thing because you don't have a second David Beckham, you don't have a second
Steven Gerrard and you don't have another player like Kieron Dyer — with his sort of
ability. No, no, no. When you go to the World Cup you must take your best players
with you if you want to have a good chance to win it. Look at France. Take away
Zinedine Zidane and you see the difference. It is the same with us without David
Beckham. Of course, I had to gamble. Yes, David can play better football but,
considering he has been away injured for several weeks, I think he did very well. I'm
actually very happy with what he did. He tried very hard all the time but you can't
expect a player to be 100 per cent fit when he has been out for such a long time."

---------------------------------
[25] Sven on Becks
---------------------------------
Posted Sunday, June 23, 2002 by bar-knee:
"Beckham can play better than he did in this tournament but, considering he has been
away for eight weeks, you cannot expect him to be 100 per cent fit."

---------------------------------
[24] More transfer rumours
---------------------------------
Posted Sunday, June 23, 2002 by bar-knee:
about Senegal's Papa Bouba Diop

Diop's agent Nicolas Geiger

"Lens and I have a fax from United informing us officially that the English club are
interested in Bouba (right). For the moment Bouba cannot yet play in England as he
hasn't played a sufficient number of games for Senegal to get a work permit. So he
won't have a chance to play in England before January."

[23] Butt does the business

---------------------------------
[22] Becks on his fitness
---------------------------------
Posted Sunday, June 23, 2002 by bar-knee:
"In my mind, I was fit and in the manager's mind, I was fit. But to come into a such
competition having had eight weeks off was hard. By the end, I felt I was close to my
full fitness - yet I am not making excuses."

---------------------------------
[21] More Ridsdale denials
---------------------------------
Posted Sunday, June 23, 2002 by bar-knee:
"The situation is quite simple it boils down to two things: we have not received a
single bid and Rio Ferdinand is not for sale. The only way things would change is if
Ferdinand makes waves about a move. All chairman have the same problem if a player no
longer wants to play for your club and another team comes in then it becomes a
difficult dilemma for you. Our strategy has always been to buy players who's value
will enhance. But it is no good then enhancing that value if, at some stage, you don't
take the money and buy someone else."

---------------------------------
[20] Rio on rumours
---------------------------------
Posted Sunday, June 23, 2002 by bar-knee:
"I have not thought about it because I was here to do a job for England. I will deal
with it when I get home, that is a more appropriate time to address it."

---------------------------------
[19] More from Stiles
---------------------------------
Posted Sunday, June 23, 2002 by bar-knee:
"It was about 9pm on June 5th and I could feel these pains. My wife and daughter took
me to hospital...I'm absolutely super now. I feel great and am okay, touch wood. I
weigh the same today as I did when I played...I was delighted with how England played
in the competition. I think they played really well."

---------------------------------
[18] Sven - my best player was Butt
---------------------------------
Posted Sunday, June 23, 2002 by bar-knee:
"I don't know if it's fair to say who has impressed me the most - but if I had to I
must say I think it was Nicky Butt. When he came on for us he was fantastic. He came
back from an injury where he was out for a long time and he played well in all the
games. His work-rate was incredible throughout and I was pleased, if not pleasantly
surprised, at just how well he did for the team."

---------------------------------
[17] Edwards admits Fergie not a pal
---------------------------------
Posted Sunday, June 23, 2002 by bar-knee:
"People criticise and say that our relationship isn't good, but if you actually
analyse the success Mancheser United has had and the support that Alex has had from
the board and how he's capitalised on that support, then we must have been doing
something right. "I've had a very good working relationship with Alex Ferguson. We're
not sort of bosom pals or anything like that, we don't socialise together, but then
again, I never did with Ron Atkinson and I never did with Dave Sexton. It was purely a
working relationship. Alex is the manager and Alex comes to to the board with
whatever, to buy players or sell players or whatever else, and as the chairman and
chief executive, I think I've supported him along the way in achieving that. You've
only got to look at the success of the team over the years to see that it's a very
good working relationship."

---------------------------------
[16] Edwards on Sven rumours
---------------------------------
Posted Sunday, June 23, 2002 by bar-knee:
That United had Sven lined up to replace Fergie

"I don't think it's my duty to comment on that. It was a very close thing. It was a
private discussion between us and who we'd chosen and I wouldn't elaborate on that."

---------------------------------
[15] Edwards on Fergie staying at United
---------------------------------
Posted Sunday, June 23, 2002 by bar-knee:
"It was a huge surprise because Alex had been very strong on the fact that last season
was going to be his last season. The board had approached him on two or three
occasions to see whether he was wanting to change his mind, and he never showed any
indication. He said no, 60 was the mark, he wanted to go, so it was a shot out of the
blue."

Not to those in his inner circle Martin...

[14] O'Leary admits defeat?
---------------------------------
Posted Sunday, June 23, 2002 by bar-knee:
"It has been written that Sir Alex is 'confident' of signing my player...and I know
how these things work. Don't get me wrong, I am sure Manchester United will do it all
properly, and through all the right channels. And the bottom line is that if Rio tells
me he thinks that Manchester United are a bigger club and that he wants to go on to
another level, then what can you do? Keep an unhappy player - and an unhappy
£30million-rated player at that? They are a big club, we know that. One of the
biggest. If, professionally, Rio wants to do that then you have got to respect a
player's wishes."

---------------------------------
[13] Nobby Stiles feeling better
---------------------------------
Posted Sunday, June 23, 2002 by bar-knee:
"It was a major heart attack. I was in hospital for a week, which meant I was able to
watch a lot of the World Cup matches. I'm absolutely super now. I feel great and am
okay, touch wood. They hospital staff were super and really looked after me"

---------------------------------
[12] O'Leary on signing Rio from West Ham
---------------------------------
Posted Sunday, June 23, 2002 by bar-knee:
"Nobody else wanted to pay up, though. I was certain Manchester United would come in,
that was a real danger. I thought 'let's get it done and dusted at £18m, West Ham's
asking price. No haggling, no messing - completed before
Fergie gets involved'. And I was sure he would get involved. He needed a central
defender and here was the lad who could become the best of them all and he was on the
market and available for transfer. They might claim now they didn't need him, that
they had other central defenders. Rubbish - they didn't rate him. Nor did Arsenal...I
hope we benefit from his talent for years to come. I can't be certain, though. In
fact, it's not easy planning for the new season, because I'm not sure who will be
playing for us! We have to sell some players and we'll see how that turns out. I would
like to add, though, that I know I've spent money, but it's been spent on players
with a re-sale value, not old has-beens who nobody else wants. My transfer deficit is
£60m but any time we want to cash in we can, because other clubs would love to have
our players. I've been backed by the board in the transfer market - and I am grateful
for that - but we've got to decide where we want to go. Y!
ou can't expect to sell Rio Ferdinand and then run away with the League, or walk into
the Champions League."

Sounds like begging David - but will your PLC listen?

[10] O'Leary admits he has fight
---------------------------------
Posted Sunday, June 23, 2002 by bar-knee:
"It also depends on what you're bringing in as well. If you want to keep spending
money without recuperating, then that's a very dangerous situation to be in. We weigh
up each situation as and when it arises, and if we think a player is going to improve
us and we know the cost, we have to bear that in mind at the time and say 'Can we
afford that?' Alternatively, we've got a big squad here and you sometimes say, well in
order to bring a player in, maybe you have to let somebody go, and that obviously
happened in the case of Jaap Stam last year. I can't say that £28million won't be
breeched, but I think it would have to be an exceptional player to do that. We'll have
to see."

Edwards on Rio

"He's a Leeds player and I think it's wrong to comment really on a player who's
playing for another club. There's no secret that Rio Ferdinand is a great player and
would certainly improve our squad. Whether Leeds are prepared to sell Rio Ferdinand,
that's another matter."

This is a bit like expert mind games - the American approach to General Noriago - make
enough noise about Rio and any submission by the man (Rio) is inevitable. He knows we
want him - over to you to tell Leeds young man

[4] Becks not 100%

Posted Sunday, June 23, 2002 by bar-knee:
So says Tord Grip who said he was about 75% fir for the World Cup campaign

[3] Veron on the move?
---------------------------------
Posted Sunday, June 23, 2002 by bar-knee:
A lot of the papers reckon Lazio selling Mendietta was the final jigsaw piece in
attempting to get Veron back - also rumours suggest that we could be offered cash plus
their Argentine wing-back Juan Pablo Sorin

---------------------------------
[2] Fergie on buying players
---------------------------------
Posted Sunday, June 23, 2002 by bar-knee:
"We have some hopes but there are several difficulties with bringing in players
nowadays. First of all it's money, some players are over priced. When you see £48
million spent on one player, as Real Madrid did with Zidane last season, you know
you're in a game where it becomes very difficult to get the very best players unless
you go to that level. Salaries, agents, the fee - all these things come into the
equation when you are looking to bring in new players but we are looking at a few
things. Over the years people have sometimes seemed surprised with certain decisions
I've made over players, but I always do what I hope is best for the team"

[1] Early Sunday papers
---------------------------------
Posted Sunday, June 23, 2002 by bar-knee:
By Tony early hours of Sunday morning - dedicated RN readers, that's what we like to
see.

'Just back from the pub and have checked the Sunday papers.

The News of the World has linked us with Senegal's Papa Bouba Diop.

The Mirror says that we have been offered Rivaldo but Kenyon says that he's too
expensive. Have to agree to be honest. The paper also claims that Fergie is in
transfer negotiations worth £80m - Rio, Escude, Thuram and Crespo in, Yorke and Veron
out. Gudjonsen is also being linked to us. He would be a good signing in my opinion.

The Sunday People has an article from O'Dreary - says he'll "talk" to Rio about his
future. Looks like he's Sir Matt Busby Way bound.'
