I'm actually fighting the same thing on my '82 450 right now. A few
weeks ago I go to pull out of my street into traffic and without any
prior warning the bike has no bottom end power. It still ran but felt
like I was running on one cylinder til it got up to about 4000 and

When you reseated the lens, was it neccessary to add glue or was there
enough residual adhesive left on it to remelt and get the job done?
Just wondering how fiddly this project is.

I know just enuf about carburetors to get myself (and maybe you, if
you follow my advice) in a world of trouble.
But I do know that all those passageways have specific tasks,
controlling three separate functions, circuits they're called -- idle
(including just off-idle to about 1/4 throttle, mid-r
All sound advice, but wouldn't a gunked up carb make it so less fuel
was getting to the engine and not more? I'm no engine expert, just
thinking logically.
Seems rather odd that the problem got worse after I cleaned the carb.
And I think I did fairly well, but not spotlessly.

I agree, clean with carb cleaner, correct sized wires and compressed
air and then clean again ...

Agreed - there's lots of little passageways and it's hard to get them
fully clean with out a soak or something. I had a salvage shop around
here disassemble and ultrasonically clean my 700S carburetors when I
got the bike for like $40. Ran beautifully afterward.

Our host, Paul, maintains a separate website devoted to Nighthawks.
It's at:

One of the pages on his site deals exclusively with carburetor
issues. You might find a solution there.

Welcome to the group. There are others on this list much better at speaking
carburetor than me, but I do know you have to have the entire airbox, boots,
snorkle, filter in place for these bikes to run right. The usual problem is
running too lean however, rather than too rich.

Last month I bought a 1984 Nighthawk 700S. It was a in pretty good
shape, but it needed a bit of maintenance.
The primary issue is there seems to be to much fuel going through the
carb at low rpm.
When under low rpm, it putters: some of the pistons don't seem to be
firing and I can hear piston sl

The advice to buy new is wise.
Just saw a used one on ebay and the bidding was at $178. So
apparently it's not common knowledge that NOS (new old stock) is still
available at retail, and for less money.

I was able to get a choke cable for my '83 650 at motionpro.com. Sucks about
your battery cables though. Why did they cut the cables rather than just
remove them?
