I've thought about trying my kneepads from my skating days. They stay
in place and even fit under jeans if they're baggy enough. They'll fit
over the outside if they're not.

I'd I have nice scars on both knees from a 30 mph.
I now have kevlar pant's that I wear religiously. Knee pads that stay in the
right place are rare as you pants move depending on what bike you ride.

Given that many pants don't have any knee protection and the knee
guards in many riding pants aren't in the right place or stay in the
right place.
Because of this, many use knee guards that are worn directly on the
legs.
