Googled a couple KZ forums and chatter there suggests that 454 valves
are tempermental, require frequent adjustment and can mimic carb
malfunctions, especially the cold/hot problem you're experiencing.
Dunno how true, but maybe worth investigating.

I'll check them but I've never had a problem like that on any of the
numerous 454's I've had, This one is about the quietest one as far
as engine noise and valves I've ever had. It's only done 12k miles.
Still it sat for over a year so there may be light rust on the
valves. I'll check
