Actually jiggling the key sounds more to me like a switch than just going
completely dead like mine did. Before I got my multimeter delivered to me I
tried shorting the starter solenoid with a screwdriver. The engine would
turn over but not fire, just like the CDI and coils weren't getting any

I would be happy if it was the ignition switch but in the past a faulty
ignition can be isolated by switching it on and off. Anyone had symptoms like
mine or John's where jiggling the key actually resulted in the electric being
restored? Graham

Well if your battery has any volts at all you'll know that's not it. Look
at the wiring diagram for the ign switch and see which circuits are closed
when it's in the ON position, test the corresponding wires for resistance
which should be close to 0. If it's high or infinite resistance then that

How do i check it exactly?

As I learned this weekend, a bad ignition switch can cause this exactly
same behavior. Something to check when you get your multimeter.

While you're checking the master cylinder pay attention to the brass
bushing that the handle pivots on, that can get worn out.

John, I have the same issue with a 1984 CB650SC Nighthawk. It just dies on me,
completely dead. Then it comes back on again. I can't take it out far because I
can count on it dying. I've pulled the fuse box and checked it out. Not sure
what the problem is. I forget, is yours the same NH? Graham
So I just got off work and I have NO power. I definitely had it in the steering
lock position all day so I didn't leave anything on...I remember this morning I
used my killswitch which I don't normally do, and then turned it back to on.
Someone once brought up a "kill your battery" position in r
Of hand, I would say make sure you have correct oil in it. That is I believe it
is a wet clutch system
Thank you,

Thanks Graham, with as many NH's S's out there, I have to believe someone
has 2-3 switches kicking around in a box. I guess I'm just hoping to find a
NH enthusiast that wouldn't mind parting with one a lil cheaper (ok, I'm a
tightwad.admission is the 1st step in recovery, right?)

So Europe seems to have gear indicator switches available. Thanks for the
links guys. But holy cow! $80- $85 shipped?
I'll try to find one in the US 1st and hopefully find one a lil more
reasonably priced. If not, I'll have to bite the bullet I guess.

Tommy, Ya, $3k is above of my cap for a R/W/B S. that's why I spent
less than half that and got a blue one. ;)
Maybe after I get this one up to par, I'll start picking up R/W/B body
parts here & there and change mine over.

Adam, when you are pulling on the lever you are disengaging the clutch,
just to keep the terminology consistent to prevent confusion. The 85 has a
hydraulic clutch. It sounds like it is not disengaging properly which
suggests air in the line or a slave cylinder issue. Higher than normal RPMs

When starting my 1985 CB650 the last week the clutch doesn't seem tight /
engaged all the way - at least it's acting like that:
- Jerks forward / dies when I put it into gear from neutral
- RPMs vary / increase as I down shift with clutch still 'fully' engaged

I may have paid a little too much. $3,000. It only had 8k miles or so, was in
very good condition, came with an extra set of carbs, and supposedly running.
It wasn't, or not well enough to call it running. But I finally got her going
with a little help and now it runs like new!

Hi everyone,
In 2008, while living in Toronto, I bought a 1982 Honda Nighthawk CB450SC,
and rode it for 4 glorious years. In 2012 I moved down to NY and stored it
in a friend's garage, unsure of what I wanted to do with it. Now she's
moving and I'd like to sell it.
In the time I had it, I re-c
