I think there must be other much cheaper because they simply oil the chain
constantly, but then it must be a mess. This seems to be the right
solution, albeit a bit pricey. I will try to do more research about it.

oiler, I don't know what the difference in price is but it is a popular mod
on the VFR Google group.

+1 I use JT or Sunstar sprockets on multiple bikes. Also Glenn is right
that it is worth trying different teeth up front because just 1 extra tooth
has a fairly dramatic affect on the bikes power delivery. Since front
sprockets are only $20 it is no big deal if you don't like the change.
