The problem is vibration. They will come loose. You should be able to find
replacements. Close to the originals anyway. I tried those fixes too, and
didn't last long.

All four stems on my 91 NH 750 are cracked. Like you I don't want to buy
new ones. My homemade solution was to get 2 or 3 nails the same length as
the stem and wrap black electrical tape around them against the stem to
provide stiffness and support. I first tried to repair the cracks with

Somewhat normal, try shifting a bit more quickly. If I shift slowly I wind
up in neutral.

I seem to be having a clunking (hard shift) from 1st to 2nd gear a lot. I am
thinking about adjusting the clutch cable a little tighter but want some input
about the issue. Is this normal for this bike or do I have a bigger issue.
