I'm told the extra flange has something to do with the California model. I
have one on mine and it works fine.

Looks like there are two different types of valve covers, depending on the
engine number. There's a "breather" in the parts list, only for one
version. I guess, it's a breathing flange, according to stricter emission
laws. So it should be working fine if you use your " old" cover.
