Ignition switch has caused the symptoms you describe on three separate
ocaisions on my 83 650 Nighthawk. Check for power in and out of the switch.

Restorable , all parts, plus new, as of yet installed(handle bars, grips,
mirrors, luggage rack) ran when parked in 2014.
Health issues has made it impossible to ride a real motorcycle. I'm
relegated to a scooter style, automatic operation.
