Can't remember who posted the question about the 550 horn, whether it had a
casing or not. The answer is no. I just bought a 550 and it was the first
thing I looked at. Its just a naked horn, as in any eBay pic with the tabs for
the wires exposed, Graham

Check also your battery. After multiple cranks, the battery must be low.
Those bikes won't charge unless the engine is running over 3k rpms, I
think.

I don't think the 550 included that feature but it's always a good idea
regardless :)

Clean and dry the spark plugs, make sure battery is fully charged, choke almost
fully on, no throttle, try starting. If nothing or its trying, give it full
choke and no throttle, try again. Once it starts, keep it above 2000 RPMs by
slowly knocking the choke back (towards off), until it will idl

you have it in gear with the kickstand down.

So, I just bought my first bike. A Honda Nighthawk 550 (1983)! I went and
looked at it and took it for a test drive the other day. It cranked and
idled easy, ran just fine. Everything seemed to be working great on top
being very sexy. The next day, I
Tommy is correct hold it a 5k rpm and see what you get it should be around
14.7. To test a stator check resistance between all yellow leads it should
be consistent. Also check for continuity to ground there should be NONE. If
either test fails replace the part. For the R/R you can only test the

First and foremost, make sure to check alt voltage above 2,00 RPMs or so.
Won't charge below this setting.

I recently got a 83 550, Yup the one and only year of this version. I love
the bike, it runs real nice (I bit noisy internally so far)-although I dont
know if that is normal) but everything's there and works! 29K miles.
I live in Minneapolis MN and need a bit of help solving my "charging"

Bill, most bent handlebars I have been able to straighten. A friend makes it
pretty easy. I use rebar benders, pipes, even two by fours. Get the angles
right and a counter force (your friend) there aren't many bends that can't be
taken out, Graham

*Kyle is right about the sissy bars. If you want to get one in your
lifetime I would start looking for after market. The Hondaline units are
rare as hen's teeth, and because of that VERY expensive when they come up

Welcome to the group!
Windshields are pretty easy, most of the aftermarket ones just clamp onto
your handlebars and will fit on any bike. Most here seem to like the Slip
Streamer windshields, since a lot of them actually have a square cutout at
the bottom for our 80s bikes.

I just joined this group. I bought an 83 Nighthawk 550 about 5 years
ago. I am only 25, so yes the bike is older than me, but I love
riding it. When I bought the bike, she had been sitting in a garage
for many years with some carburetor issues. So my dad and I took at
it and cleaned her up real

The fuel follows a pretty straight forward path from the fuel cock on the
bottom of the tank down to the carbs. Do you see any drips/moisture there?
What about the bottoms of the carbs?

and is a great ride. It was sold by a man who collected nighthawks so
it's in good shape considering the year, and has about 24k miles on
it. Besides the fact that it's my first bike, and I'm ecstatic and
