I always start looking for a gas station around 100miles just to play it safe. Paul's right, becoming familiar with the petcock while riding is good advice. Ah, the mysterious reserve tank question again. There isn't really a separate tank, honda just put two pickups in the one tank. One his higher than the other so when the level drops below the main pickup you run out of fuel. When you switch to reserve it starts slurping off the bottom of the tank.
