Thanks Steve, I will check that before replacing anything.
Appreciate the info.

Thanks Nick! That is some useful information. I will check the speedo and
that drive at the wheel.
Much appreciated.

My speedo wasn’t working, the speedo drive at the wheel was the problem. Inside
the drive there is a thin metal disc that has two indents that the drive
locates in. Mine was split. I brazed it together and now it’s fine.
Also, I tested the speedo itself by inserting a cut off screwdriver into the
Hi Rob.
Check to see if the drive on the front hub is broken, If you remove the
speedo cable at the front wheel you and look into where it came from you
should see a metal tab that the end of the speedo cable locates on to. When

Hey Mike,
I am have this same issue.
Already ordered by new speedo box gear.
I read in a different thread that the gear needs to be coupled (aligned)
correctly with the metal tabs in the wheel to avoid the plastic gear breaking
again.
Was this the case with you, or is the alignment not very i

The washers you mentioned should have tabs on them, two bent slightly
inward and two bent slightly outward. The inward facing tabs are designed
to fit into notches cast into the wheel hub. The two outward tabs fit into
similar notches in the nylon gear fitting inside the gear housing. Both

Thanks for the tip and welcoming message!
When I positioned the cable, I did attempt to "flat head" the strip into

I went through this a few months back and had the shop replace the cable,
it was cheap, under $40 but then it still did not work, not sure why they

I had one where the end of the cable came loose from the cable, it wasn't
readily apparent but when I gave it a tug it poped off. It was on a tach

but it's worth a try.
Farther in towards the wheel hub, between the speedo drive housing and the
hub itself is a thin washer about the size of a half-dollar. It's covered
by a dust cover. The washer has two (or maybe f
Before you order a new cable, check the drive it connects to on the
drive hub at left front axle, and be sure the screw that secures it is
still there. If not, order a new one and resist the urge to
overtighten when installing it. It breaks fairly easily.

The mechanism the cable end mounts into is not a "sensor" but a gear-
driven housing mounted on the axle shaft.
So yes, the wheel, axle assembly and caliper have to come off for
access.
The "tabs" described are part of a washer-like device with two ears
bent inward to match up with notches machin
Well, it appears it could be the cable. When I pulled the cable off
the back of the speedo, I inspected the end of the cable. Sure enough,
the end snapped right off. Is it possible that there was still enough
tension on the cable to at least partially drive the trip meter and
odometer but not the s
I have had to replace my Hub on the front wheel. I bought my '84 650

to replace it, I noticed that the Hub was the culprit. Inside the

Not familiar with that particular model, but mechanical speedo gear
assemblies work pretty much the same way on all Hondas.
There should be an external stop molded into the housing of the gear.
It should protrude enough from the housing to match up with a similar
