The treats the exec argument of the .desktop files not as
a command but as a parameter to pass to the session command. For
SDDM this can be observed in the file src/helper/UserSession.cpp. The
NixOS xsession has been modified to handle this difference as a special
case. The same thing happens w
SDDM and GDM are problematic with alternative desktops for me as well.
I'd recommend lightdm.

SDDM is problematic to me with i3 too. Right now, if I try to login to
i3 via SDDM I'm returned to SDDM (I don't have plasma enabled). Logs
didn't look like anything was wrong to me.
