Anything 'for free' from Oracle makes me suspicious. In my tin foil hat suspicions, I would think Oracle did this (donating it to Apache) BECAUSE Google has supported Libre Office, and they wanted to put some kind of 'zing' to Google, and they don't really care about open software. This could be
