There is a lot of training material on the web.  My list is at:
http://wwns.com/wwns/staff/david/private/ham_radio/training.html

It is very possible with a few hours studying to pass the Technician
and General test.  We have had several people go from no license to
Extra in one exam session.

If your interested in taking any of the tests I advise bringing $30, so
if your close to passing and want to take a test again you might be
able to.  Also bring something for an ID. A Drivers License works.

There is a lot of interesting things that are going on.  Some of those
I have my finger into are:
Mesh Networking
http://www.aredn.org/
http://usercontent.aredn.org/K/5/K5DLQ/livemap.html

A number of repeaters.  This is one of our local projects:

Software Defined Radio:
https://apache-labs.com/al-products/1027/ANAN-100D-HF---6M-100W-All-Mod
e-SDR-Transceiver.html
As you can see if you look at that site my hardware is already a bit
dated.  The software I have been using is still being developed:

I have not done much with this project, but AMSAT is working on a
geostationary satellite that will be SDR based.  They are looking for
people to participate both from the software and hardware development
end of the project:

Something I worked on over the Christmas holidays was integrating
the Yaesu FT-991, fldigi and cqrlog.

This was a start, but left a lot of holes in the instructions:

aesu-ft-991on-linux/

My notes on the effort:

I know it is an abuse of HTML, but should work.

And if your looking for a long list of links as to some of the stuff
these guys do:

Any questions don't hesitate to call or email.
