This is something that might be useful to a lot of you. I'm a big fan of Veeam Backup and Replication for backing up my virtual environment. They have a free tool available for backing up a standalone Windows system, called Veeam Endpoint Protection. The linux version of that has been in beta for a while, but it is now released as a stable tool (with free and paid versions.)
The basic free version will allow you to do a full system backup to a separate drive, NFS share, SMB share, etc, and do a BARE METAL system recovery. It is available in DEB and RPM format. The Windows version of this software saved my bacon a few months ago when I had two drives in a RAID 5 array die all of a sudden. Fortunately, I had a full backup and simply rebuilt my RAID array, booted up from the bootable CD that is created in the backup archive location, and had the server restored in less than an hour.
