This might sound tautological, but it sounds like there is a rendering
engine being invoked somehow. What does the p flag do and how would it know
to render the html? I'm looking at that commands now.

blah blah to print out code listings. So just now I went to print out
the /var/www/html/index.html so that I could review its syntax. Trouble
