Greetings!

Does anyone else use PortableApps [0] or Pendriveapps [1]? Basically, these are Windows applications configured to install on an external drive. This is usually assumed to be a flash drive, but I've got a laptop drive in an external enclosure, connected via SATA that accomplishes the same thing. The objective is to allow you to take these applications anywhere you go and use them on any computer with a USB or SATA port without installing anything.

My actual point is... I've recently noticed that most of the PortableApps I have installed on the external drive seem to work well via wine (I'm running Mandriva 2010.1). I don't know if this indicates that wine has gotten better, or that the installation to the external drive has made it easier for wine to do its thing... or maybe both. I haven't done any "thorough testing," but all of the applications I tried to start at least started without issue.

This is probably not "wow!" -type news... but I find it interesting that these apps work as well as they do. It's also quite useful to have easy access to so many useful Windows apps when running either Windows or Linux.
