This isn't an issue with VGA out, your macbook doesn't *do* VGA at all.
DP->DVI works because the adaptor is passive, and the display looks basically
like normal DVI to the driver. VGA

nvidiafb which was not suggested in nouveau wiki. The console comes up, nouveau
and drm module are shown

Yeah, I didn't expect my earlier fix to fix this or the other issues that have
been reported. They fix another issue I encountered however. I have been
unable to reproduce these so far
