I have the same problem, but the hint does not solve it, as I'm using an
internal server via standard FTP. I have no problem connection via ftp
command.

I use Ubuntu 10.10 x86_64 and the version of Sbackup is 0.11.3 installed
from the ubuntu official repos. It does happens every time (at least on
my computer) running sbuckup as a user and as a root.
