Watch out. There is a pitfall here (yes, I have fallen in this trap).
Try \type{\doifempty{\empty}{yes}} = <\doifempty{\empty}{yes}>\crlf
and you will see that it is NOT empty despite the suggestive use of the \empty
macro!
