Great, this works. It's a bit more clear now. There is still one problem. I use the sans fallback in my typescript as follows, so that every alternative such as italic etc .. is mapped to my regular font (I have only one font file for the moment). Why do i get cmr italic instead of regular karat

I have tried the three of your propositions: First : keeping sans: 1. using \ss works 2. \definebodyfont[ss,Karat] does not. Second : changing from sans 3. Changed all refs to "sans" into "serif" in my typescript file karat.tex. This works too. Now, my font is a sans. What is the best way to conf
