I dumped my Chevrolet Equinox LT with On*Star in November when I found out
about this. My new Acura has 24 hour roadside assistance, but no auto-unlock
feature. So I have to be responsible with my keys.

This is really a huge misstep for GM, one that should be a public relations
nightmare if the press cared about anything other than white girls getting
kidnapped or who is surging in the election (based on the results of any single
poll).

General Motors advises that they WILL NOT upgrade the older analog devices.
You will lose your service. They have discontinued my Onstar as of December
31, 2007. They will monitor the analog until it goes away, and will respond
until analog goes away. They take no responsibility for the analog digital
transition, or their failure to change soon enough.

Verizon and AT&T are eliminating analog cell phone service on February 18.
Others carriers are likely to follow suit. This won't affect modern cell
phones, but may affect older ones. However, this will affect OnStar and similar
services for many vehicles. According to this
article<http://blog.washingtonpost.com/fasterforward/2007/12/goodbye_to_2007and_to_analog_c.html>,
Lexus was installing analog systems until 2004, and GM as late as 2005. Even
high end Mercedes were shipping with analog communications equipment last year.
The Washington
Post<http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2007/12/21/AR2007122101501.html>
reports that car users may have been notified.

Replacing a cell phone is pretty cheap, but upgrading a car's communications
equipment probably isn't.
