More than you ever needed to know:

How it works... The computer

How it works... The computer was first published in 1971 by Ladybird
Books. Written by David Carey and illustrated by B.H Robinson. A second,
slightly revised, edition was published in 1979, with additional material
written by James Blythe and some new illustrations by Gerald Witcomb.

If you are interested in computers, their function and operation, but are
discouraged by their complexity, you should read this book. It deals as
simply as possible with the principles, and the combination of carefully
written text and instructive illustrations should give older students a
good basic knowledge of what computers are all about.
