I'm not sure I'd have felt guilty for charging them for the full hour. This
seems like a rather obscure issue-not the type of thing you'd have been
expected to know (if the latter, then I definitely wouldn't charge
in the future.

Interesting to note that it’s not just Hyper-V!

the next time this happens the client (whoever that client may be)
I got one of my co-workers into PowerShell specifically because of the
ability to run a script that would kill CD rom connections in our VMware
environment before patching.

XenServer will also freak out if anything is mounted on the CD/DVD drive and
you attempt to do a host update. You have to manually eject any media from the
drive for all VMs before you can update
Subject: RE: Hyper-V VM's and unnecessary heart failure
SO does vmware.
If you try to move a host from one server to another, either a mounted CD/DVD
or a mounted floppy will cause it to fail.

I had a similar issue with two HyperV VMs a few weeks ago, but it was due to
the SCSI driver. Same solution as yours.
The difference was a reboot of the VM host following MS updates. Prior to
this, there had never been an issue.
