Most consumer computers do not come with serial ports while most "commercial"
compute

I have found not all Serial <--> USB adapters are created equal. My car's ECU
(engine computer) is programmable but only via serial port, and my laptop only
has USB ports and I had to be particular about which adapter I use

I went through various USB to serial adapters. I saw and bought a cheap one
made by Trendnet and it simply works all of the time.
