Yes it should work for Office97 also as well as any other app that need
to modify the Reg at first run. I have to run Access97 for our student
information system and currently after I reimage a machine I need to
logon as administrator and run Access before anyone else can use it. I
just found out yesterday that I could do this with GPO's so I haven't
researched which Reg Keys I need access to for the apps yet. Just did it
with PageMaker because I found the key on Adobe's Site.

Can this be done for Office97 on W2K pro as well?

If so, what would the reg keys be that I need to reset the perms on?

Thanks

Troy

If your running a Win2k Shop (Pro and Server using AD) I just found out
a cool GPO feature yesterday. You can add registry keys to the GPO and
set the permissions on them. Prime example is PageMaker 6.5, You need to
be a member of the PowerUsers Group just to launch the program. So I
added the Reg Key to the GPO and set the permissions so anyone or a
special group can have write access to that portion of the registry. It
also has options of setting permissions of Files and Folders on the HD.

I thought this was realy cool.

Jason,

I'm interested in the "compatws" security template. We have a very
locked
down enviroment and it can be a pain to install a simple piece of
software.
I normally have to go through and make security changes to the file
system
and registry for users to have access to software. Could you give me
some
more info on this template.

Thanks

Lee

Eric,
You really don't want your users to have 'Power User' privileges. I
would
suggest you install the applications and then apply the 'compatws'
security
template to the laptops. That allows users to use applications that
would
not normally run unless the user was part of the Power User group and
protects your registry and other system files from people who like to
'snoop' around.

Thank You,

Subject: Power User Rights

I need to give some laptop users in my organization Power User
privileges on
their PC's so that they are able to install applications and such. I
added
them to the Power User group locally, but as soon as they login to the
domain, they lose all of their privileges. Anyone have any ideas what I
have to do on the server to give them this right without giving them
full
administrative privileges? I am having trouble figuring out where to
give
them rights - in group membership, group policy, file system?

Thanks in advance,

~Eric
