Hello,

I haven't written here in a while. I'll be in the city later this
week and I would be interested in meeting up with any local
nycwireless geeks.

I am one of the founders of Ile Sans Fil - a completely volunteer run
community wireless group in Montreal. We got started 3 years ago, and
currently have approx 30 volunteers, 80 hotspots, 18,000 users, and we
have created WifiDog (open source captive portal + network management
software).

Stuff we're up to recently is a project called HAL where we will be
running local servers at 20 of our hotspots. It's similar to the
BostonMusicProject - except ours is a lot bigger, has
location-specific content, and includes video. The servers have
mt-daap (open source iTunes) servers running which people can connect
to using iTunes or soon just a web browser through using a java applet
which handles itunes on bonjour/rendezvous/zeroconf. We're partnering
with a local college radio station to promote emerging Quebecois and
Canadian musicians. They will be creating location-specific
playlists.

Additionally we are using the HAL servers to highlight montreal
podcasters and vloggers, as well as hopefully working with local
artists for location and platform specific art.

Also we are in the midst of using our portal pages (Wifidog) to
promote young Canadian visual artists. We just finished our first
exhibition which involved works from 11 artists appearing randomly
across 30 hotspots for 1 week. We will be doing 5 more of those
week-long "augmented space" exhibitions. Here's some info about that
project
(http://ilesansfil.org/tiki-index.php?page=TerminusGrant).

If anyone's interested in hearing more about any these things or in
telling me about their projects (or just in shooting the breeze) let
me know.

So far it looks like the only sure time I'm available is this friday
afternoon and evening. So I would probably suggest after work / 5-7
pm somewhere.

cheers,
mike lenczner
