Cool article.

We (http://IleSansFil.org) just did an protest
yesterday at the Independent Media Democracy Day at a
Montreal university. We set up a "rogue" access point
on a university's network (with the Student's Union's
backing) and the splash page was set to:

The IMDD day was organized by Uberculture
(http://www.mediawrench.ca), a group dedicated to
corporate accountability, and was partially funded by
the National Film Board (http://citizen.nfb.ca).
IleSansFil was commissioned by Uberculture to set up a
the wireless network for the day with the custom
splash page.

Hopefully you will all excuse the rhetoric on the
captive portal page, but we wanted to make sure that
people got the point. Also, there was
miscommunication regarding which group was supposed to
do the content for the captive portal so we ended up
slapping a page together last minute.

Something that we did that was kind of cool was
setting up a place for people to share online
resources. We gave them a little box to submit urls
that would be helpful to other media activists. It
was very under-utilized, but it's on the right track
for us in our goal of using our hotspots to create
community.

I tried to give credit to Julian Bleeker for the idea
but I did say that it was the first time activists
(Uberculture) used the captive portal for an activist
purpose (not just to demonstrate the potential, or as
a theoretical exercise). I still don't know if that's
true and I would still like to be corrected if any of
you know of someone already having done it.

On a potentially related note(?), this morning I went
to my part-time job for that same university's IT
department (level 1 phone support) and was fired ;-)

Cheers,
Mike
