Radar is lighting up with birds all along the Mid-Atlantic Coast once again.
Between spotty rain projected to come through later along with the
post-midnight wind shift, there could be fallouts in some places, and there
will definitely be turnover regardless.
It might not be quite as heavy as
Today's Linnaean Society of NY walk in Riverside Park, lead by
Geoffrey Nulle, got off to a slowish start but after the morning
downpour, we enjoyed lots of warblers as well as excellent views of a
yellow-billed cuckoo and an immature male blue grosbeak.

My wife just called me outside to check out a big bird circling Five
Rivers Env. Ed. Center, next door. It was a Sandhill Crane, and it
headed off to the west. Nice year bird for the center - maybe a first ever!

First, many, many thanks to Jared for alerting my friends & I to the hatch out
at the SW corner of the reservoir. It was truly amazing.
We had all of the warblers listed in Richard Fried's report (NYS BIRDS) except
the Tennesse. We had the following which Richard did not list:

I opened the window wide this morning and listened intently for a few
minutes, hoping for warbler song. I heard an Ovenbird, but nothing else.
Later I heard a Yellow across the street. Then, just after 11:30, there was
a brief rain shower, lasting maybe 5 minutes. Shortly after it ended all

There was a male Mourning Warbler in Prospect Park this morning. It
was on the south side of Lookout Hill on the hillside above the
Wellhouse Path, between the back of the Wellhouse and the stairway
that ascends Lookout Hill about 150 yards to the east.
Good birding,

Going on a tip from Morgan Tingley indicating the Ramble was hopping early
this morning, I headed into the park later (around 10:15), just as the sky
grew dark and the rain began to fall. After waiting out the downpour at the
Maintenance Meadow bathrooms, I spent the next hour and a half amidst a
To all whom I inadvertantly confused: I was referring to a "hatch out" of
large numbers of small insects, probably termites, that attracted a rather
large number of feeding birds. The tree limbs and the air above were teeming
with insects, with predictable results. I didn't mean to imply that
A singing male Mourning Warbler was seen this morning from about 9:45
- 11:00AM, at the Quogue Wildlife Refuge, along the boardwalk area
parallel to the rail road tracks. The bird was seen on both sides of
the walkway, between the stream and the overspill sitting area. The

Thanks to the good work and spotting of another birder (so sorry name eludes
me) was able to see blue grosbeak. Around 7:30 am Hung out and bird
appeared again. Seems to move between bushes west of toll booth to the
center meridian inside.

Thursday afternoon, about 1500hrs: Saw 2 monk parakeets at Town of
Hempstead Marina in Freeport (Guy Lombardo Marina???) at the end of Guy
Lombardo Avenue. They were feeding on dandelion seed heads on the lawn
near the main buildings. I have some poor photos if anyone is interested.

The Blue Grosbeak finally appeared around 8 AM as previously described, the
turn around circle between the bathrooms and entrance at Field 2. It also fed
on the grassy circles to the west, and flew into the shrubrow along the
northwest edge. There was an adult White-crowned Sparrow near the ent
This morning at 6:30 am Jared Keyes called to alert me to a hatch out in the
trees around the pedestrian bridge over the bridle path at the southwest corner
of the reservoir, just north of the 86th street transverse. I arrived at 8 am
to find the trees alive with multiples of many of the warble
I've been getting excellent looks at the Western Fox Sparrow for the
past 15 min or so. It's worthing quietly thru the leaf litter between
the N-S woodchip path and what I believe is the SE lawn. All just a
few paces E of the Lennon memorial.
A fascinating bird and thanx to all who've posted
Seth Asubel called this morning to report that the Western Race Fox Sparrow
continues in the same location it was relocated yesterday. This is, in
Strawberry Fields on the Southeast lawn near the west drive closest to the
Webster statue.
Good luck if you go!
