Heavily armed with insect repellant against continuing hordes of mosquitoes,
I birded Jones Beach -- West End from 7:30 until about 9:30 this morning,
followed by searches at the Point Lookout town park and several other Jones
Beach locales. The most noteworthy bird was a Clay-colored Sparrow
There was a modest morning flight at Robert Moses SP today, with two American
Pipits and a Purple Finch being perhaps the most noteworthy among the birds
overhead. A lot of late fall migrants moved in today, including Golden-crowned
Kinglet, Brown Creeper, Slate-colored Junco, and at least 25
Doug Futuyma saw a third Clay-colored Sparrow today along the hedge by the
Coast Guard Station at Jones Beach, Nassau County.

Subject: LI Birds: Parasitic
After a slow start from 7AM to 9AM in Alley Pond this morning, the mid-morning
activity was good. Notable species included Winter Wren, Brown Creeper,
Red-breasted Nuthatch, Dark-eyed Junco, Cape May Warbler, Blue-headed Vireo and
another Philadelphia Vireo. Its been a great September for
Had a handicapped hummer at my feeders today. It had a growth or something
around it bill about halfway up and couldn't get its bill in far enough to
eat.
It looked a little bedraggled which might have been caused by its perdicament.
It was sad to see but it is survival of the fittest.
Yesterday during a walk at Van Courtlandt Park in the Bronx, we turned up 2
juvenile White-crowned Sparrows. The first was found around the restoration
area behind the Van Courtlandt Museum House and the second was found near
the golf course around Vault Hill.
