January 16 - On the January Waterfowl Count at Fort Erie, Ontario,
between the Peace Bridge and the Ice Boom there were:
6,823 Greater Scaup
346 Lesser Scaup(unusually high)
79 Redhead
41 American Black Ducks
1 Mallard X Am. Black Duck
3 Mallard
9 Canada Geese
763 Red
I did my bit for the waterfowl count yesterday. along the Hudson River from
southern Albany County to southern Greene County.
Except for a small stretch near Catskill, the river was completely frozen
over. I spent an inordinate amount of time searching that one small stretch
of open water.
I birded the the east shore of the Hudson River today from Clermont, Columbia County, to Staatsburg, Dutchess County. The river was pretty well frozen over, with the exception of the ship channel.There was little to report other than 12 Bald Eagles, with four at Clermont State Historic Site, four a

In a post to the New Jersey list, Paul Guris summarized a 1-day fishing trip
out of Belmar (northern NJ) in which they observed 24 COMMON MURRE (a new
state record), 1 THICK-BILLED MURRE, an adult ATLANTIC PUFFIN and 3 DOVEKIE
as well other winter species including Humpback Whale. Not bad for a win
