This afternoon Vicki Bustamante found a handsome male *WESTERN TANAGER* in
her yard on the east side of Lake Montauk (Suffolk Co.). She called a number
of birders in the area and after some waiting, the tanager reappeared and
gave excellent looks. The location is at the top of Big Reed Path, a stee
Thank you to everyone who responded on and off the list. The general
consensus is that it is not an accipiter at all, but rather a juvenile
Red-shouldered Hawk. My bad. I responded to Tom Carrolan that we had
actually spotted a beautiful adult red-shouldered later in the day.

I think it looks like an immature red shouldered hawk, with streaking up to the

Looks more like a young Red-tailed Hawk to me, the tail doesn't look
proportionally long enough for an accipiter and the white spotting on the back
in common among 1st year Red-tails.

The last few days, with light winds and partly overcast skies, have been ideal
for viewing perched and flying raptors. On the Jones barrier strip yesterday we
had three Rough-legged Hawks, a dark morph bird perched just south of Bay
Parkway roughly opposite Field 10, and light morph birds at Tob
Dune Rd. was extremely quiet this morning with just a Belted Kingfisher and
a Northern Harrier making a presence until I got to the Ponquogue Bridge and
found a Merlin perched on a LIPA pole at the old Ponquogue Bridge Park. It
preened for awhile before taking off. Photos and videos can be seen h
