Headed out to the East End specifically for the Montauk Brown Pelicans and
Sagaponack White Ibis. Was successful on both counts.
Only the juvenile of the two BROWN PELICANs seen yesterday was on the
western jetty at the inlet to Montauk Harbor when I arrived at 9:20.
It was forced farther out
Today we birded Orange County in search of migrating shorebirds. However,
we also discovered hurricane Irene had left the black dirt region of Orange
County in a sad state of flooding. Most crops were destroyed, farmed
fields were transformed into lakes, and some areas are left smelling
Hello All, Birding with Dick Belanger and Rich Kaskan this morning
on Godwit Flats, they're were 14 today. Red Knot totals were 27 and we
finally had a little more variety with terns. Been waiting all week. Among
the many Royals and decreasing Commons were 5 Forsters,[new high for
As of 2:00, the White Ibis continues on the far end of the plowed
field on Bridge Lane. Patience is required to locate the bird as
there is much heat distortion. Early this morning, it was well
concealed in the gully at the far end of the field; it was quite a
while before it came out
Checked the Bridgehampton ponds this morning - Mecox had a CASPIAN TERN, a
single BLACK TERN, an immature GULL-BILLED TERN and over 70 Black Skimmers.
Shorebird numbers and variety were both low considering the date and the
habitat. Sagaponack Pond quickly produced the WHITE IBIS (relocated this
One Buff -breasted Sandpiper was present in the shorebird flock at Field 7
this morning. I did not see the previously reported Baird's, but there were
2 Pectorals and 2 White-rumps, along with the ususal suspects.
