Today (10/27/12) was the fifth day in a row that I've found White-winged
Crossbills. (Mary Beth Warburton mentioned she found a flock of over 20 in
Potsdam (St. Lawrence Co.) this past Tuesday.) All 5 locations are areas
where White-winged Crossbills nested this past winter. I did continue to
A lovely day (10/27) at the watch here, with the highlight 4 subadult Golden
Eagles, a really nice daily total for Chestnut Ridge. The first bird that
passed was relatively close, and digiscoped pictures taken then allowed it to
be aged as a Basic I. The three others that showed about 20

Despite some decent search efforts by several birders, including myself, the
shrike was not relocated. I stopped searching somewhere around 3:30 PM.
The word is that the bird took flight heading west and was last seen near Field
7. Search parties canvassed scrub areas near Fields 6,7 & 8 but
Field 7 is WEST of field 8; when we left it, the bird was in the more western
of the two patches of natural vegetation described below.

The bird was found by Joan Quinlan around 11:00. It fed actively on crickets in
the moorland between field 8 and the model airplane field for two hours, then
got up and flew east to the area between fields 7 and 8. It was hunting in this
area when we left it.
