While riding an LIRR train (Babylon line) into the city for work this morning
(around 8:45) I spotted an OSPREY flying north of the tracks, between
Wantagh Parkway and Bellmore station. At first glance I almost wrote it off as
another gull (plenty of Ring-billed and Herring seen during the

In the same vein, 2-3 winters ago I observed American Wigeon on Massapequa Lake
closely following feeding American Coot. The Wigeon were picking up aquatic
plant material that the Coot were either stirring up when they dove, or that
dropped from their bills when they resurfaced to ingest it.

The SAY'S PHOEBE at Caumsett State Park was a no-show this morning between 9:45
and 11:15. Most of that time was spent during two vigils overlooking the field
west of the parking lot. I walked the entire eastern side of the field, but
stayed mostly near the newly plowed section. Thankfully
A juvenile Baird's Sandpiper (presumably the same bird reported here Wed. &
Thur.) made a brief appearance (< 2 minutes) in the puddles of parking field #7
at Heckscher State Park morning, just before 11:00. When I first arrived the

At high tide late this morning (11:30), one Marbled Godwit was still present on
the bar adjacent to the Coast Guard station. It was snoozing among a flock of
Oystercatchers, Western Willets and Short-billed Dowitchers. A larger flock of
